Title: Did any of you tried to fit SS tank on monster?
Post by: Racka0 on October 22, 2012, 03:31:20 AM
Guys

I am planing to" cafe racerize" my 99 750 monster. I kind a like the SS (older) gastank. will that fit or I need  to make drastic mods.
Also like to swap the swingarm to make it a little bit longer. Any Idea? pictures?
Appreciate any help.

one thing to seriously consider is the difference in the frame and how the tank sits on the frame. That goemetry difference could alter your vision a bit as well as affect the clearance of some issues. Some mods may be needed in terms of different stacks or pod filters in order to have proper fitment as well.

Since the old Monsters were based on the frame of the 888, it might be easier to fit an 888 tank?

888/851 tanks mount in a totally different way.
And they're FI, so quite a project to make it fit.

And I suspect they're a bit hard to find.
Really pretty tanks, tho.

Edit... apparently 888 tanks are similar mounting.

Thanks for the advises.
I got my Idea from this picture >Look like this is a monster frame with an ss fuel tank.

But the bike really inspired me is this one made from an ss900

There's one of each on Ebay now.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1991-92-Ducati-851-1993-95-888-NOS-alloy-gas-tank-58620171AA-perfect-condition-/160774773723?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item256eec5bdb (http://www.ebay.com/itm/1991-92-Ducati-851-1993-95-888-NOS-alloy-gas-tank-58620171AA-perfect-condition-/160774773723?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item256eec5bdb)

But.... they've got the same fitment description, but from the pictures, they *clearly* mount differently.

make the beast with two backsall.

I'm not sure which are which.

Appears the rounded tanks are the early 851, and the more angular are the late 851 and 888.

We need an 'early SBK' aficionado to chime in here.

1st link is 851/888 later version whereas the 2nd link is an early 851 only I believe....

Is that front end really low in the first pic? Also seems like there's a tad more rake.

Forks sure look short!!!      [roll]

I really like that tank tho.......I would like that mod, but probably cheaper & more advised to buy a SF'er

What is involved to mount a 888 tank on a 98' carb monster?  I would need a 3-4 lb electric fuel pump..what else to make the conversion?
Really like that look!!!

Probably welding new mounting tabs

i had jim at italspares measure an 888 tank last week in case it would fit an ss, but they're narrower underneath.  i also think the top frame rails are a bit closer together on the 851/monster compared to the ss looking at my three.  maybe i should have tried my spare monster tank on the ss before i bought another ss tank.

1992 851 introduced the flip up tank and the later rounded bodywork.  the tank shape is very nice.  i had an 888 in a couple of weeks ago and was admiring how neat it looks.  apart from the god awful later rounded tail bodywork.

pre 92 has a much fatter tank between your knees (like a jap 4) with the single mount screw at the rear.  they don't flip. 1988 to 1990 (89?) were aluminium.  and they have the square tail bodywork.

89 and 93 together.
