Title: Help! My engine case broke down....
Post by: RED WOLF on October 23, 2012, 06:10:33 AM
Hi guys.
Last month i was riding on my duc, when i fell down in a "crater" on the road......
The  result: My engine case broke down in the fixation point with the frame.
You can see what happened in the pics:

Here in Brazil i can´t find another case to buy.... and i can´t buy it in the USA because of the document numbers.
The only way i think is to make welding.
So, the question is:
Anyone knows what is the material that the case is made?
Or what is the material that is need to use in the welding process?

Thanks so much!

I bought my bike with the case broken like that (though not all the way across) and just had it welded.  I took it to a welder who happened to have a piece of stock that matched the OD/ID of the motor mount.  You should be able to do the same thing, I would think.

It's aluminum, though I don't know if there is some specific kind.

Mine after welding:

Notice how it's one piece across (and now can't be split for engine work) I would suggest avoiding that.  I'm not looking forward to having to cut it open in the event I need to.

The image may not work...I'm not sure why.

WOW....I am used to seeing it cracked like that on the other engine to frame mounting point due to cheapo frame sliders that actually transfer the impact damage as apposed to deflecting it.

Thanks man!
I only want to be sure about what kind of material i'll need to use in the welding process.
And, i'll open the engine to do that.
Anyway thanks again!

When I first saw that pic I felt it was an awful bodgy fix.

On reflection it's actually OK, and if you do have to split the cases in future all that's needed is an accurate cut, then on re-assembly a suitable sized washer/shim and a bit of sealant and Bob's yer uncle.

Mine was welded in one piece, I just took it off the frame.  I think the guy used a regular welder as opposed to (TiG/MiG? I'm not a welder).  He managed not to tear anything internal up, as it runs just fine now :)

I've had two engines welded at the rear engine to frame bolt, although neither right across the width of the engine, as in the picture. both mine cracked at each side a couple inches from the end.

They've both held up very well for a few years now.
