the rain is hittin it now...the winds will be here in the next couple/few hours...and the joys of dealing with PEPCO and power outages will ensue!

I've got two days worth of gas for my little 900 watt generator. All I care about is running the sump pumps if power goes out. Not going to be cold enough to worry about having heat. If it gets to 50 in the house, it won't be the end of the world.

i'm pretty much expecting our power to go out (for days)
we're as ready as we can be
like lethe said... at least it isn't cold

just went for a little drive again and passed by the lake. I'm surprised they didn't drop the level, that is going to mean some bad things later on. Not for me but down town from me and downstream of there will get screwed when they do open the floodgates.

i'm thinking the car might be able to hydroplane across the deeper puddles. lol

OC in maryland is taking a pouding. One of the big walking piers has collapsed already and the worst isn't supposed to hit for several more hours.

I'm hoping the sickly old pine on my neighbors corner hangs on, or comes down in pretty tight 'safe' arc. if it comes down... gonna take power for the hood no matter what.

How much snow are they forecasting for you - 2-feet?

Probably sustained at 40+ here out west of Philadelphia, as of 1530. Power still on - that's a miracle...gonna be a mess.

Damn.

Just got word a little while ago that all of the bridges in NYC have been closed.

I bought a vehicle on Long Island and it was supposed to be headed south tonight.

I was really hoping it'd make it out of there ahead of the storm.

Post by: lethe on October 30, 2012, 04:42:53 AM
I'm fine, never even lost power and didn't get a whole lot of rain out of it as the northern most part of the storm was dragging in dry air for some reason.
Looks like getting to work will be a problem for a bit though, NYC got screwed.
Title: Re: Hurricane Sandy....
Post by: ducpainter on October 30, 2012, 04:45:05 AM
The storm turned out to be a whole lot of nothing here.

They are warning of some flooding of small rivers and streams, but it really doesn't seem like it's rained hard enough for that.

I hope all those to the south are OK.

Not too bad here. A lot of wind and rain, but my place is good. Had a rather large tree fall on a neighbor's house, and then the power went out around nine thirty last night.  Been up walking around helping clear the road so far this morning. Not much else to do when there isn't coffee...

Judging from the pictures I saw yesterday, the house I grew up in probably had a foot of water in it.  I always say leaving Jersey was the best thing I ever did...twice, but now I really mean it.  I'm so happy I'm not in the AC area now.  That place is trashed right now.

I'm in Manhattan now and it's a bit crazy but calm.  I think some folks (myself included) were expecting more of a dud, like Irene---all media talk, no punch.  Clearly, we were wrong.  Probably y'all have seen lots of pics online, but for those that haven't this is what lower Manhattan and Brooklyn looked like at the height.  Most of the water has receded now but the flooding destroyed a lot of cars, shops, etc.

north jersey's a mess too - lots of trees down - we've got next to no power here maybe 25 mins outside of manhattan, and as far as I can tell, most of the surrounding area is dealing with the same issues.  for the most part, everyones safe, but there's plenty of damage.  nothing like what we're dealing with down the shore though...and those pics of manhattan are out of control.  I heard the battery area storm surge peaked at ~14'...

Finally heard from my brother this afternoon, he and his family live on the south shore of L.I.  They're all right.  Lots of flooding.  He was told 90% of The island was out of power this morning.  He's an electrician and has been on call dealing with downed lines and submerged generators.

My younger brother was concerned for my parents on L.I.  He tried to talk my father into staying with him because my parents always lose power and usually for a week or so.  My fathers response "I lived the first 18 years of my life without electricity, I think I manage for one week."

Im doing just fine. thanks for the the thought though!

I was out there for a bit and theres just a ton of flood damage. This one is going to cost everyone a ton of money since the city was effectively locked out for 2 days.

I've got a ton of friends that got hit hard, most of it is in the wallet, which is better than a loss of life, but the city is already in trying times and its going to be pretty bad for a while here.

When I look at those pics I can't helping wondering where all the rats have fled to.  Downtown should be teeming with them, no?
T said she saw pics of them leaving the tunnels and seeking higher ground on railings etc...

don't worry...there will be no shortage of rats.

edit...

On a side note, the wind was worse here last night than Monday.

Zeke's trampoline is in the middle of the field. The enclosure is toast. I'm just glad it didn't go the other way...into the new house :P

Yup. I ended up with one of those once.

I am living in Toms River right now, its next to seaside heights. The big thing now is no power and no gas. People are driving to PA to buy gasoline and many do not know how they are going to make it to work. Lines at the few places that do have gasoline are 3-4 hours. There are few ATMs working to get money from.

I would say the critical thing here would be alieviate the gas problem first. No gas, no way to move around to get supplies, go to work, work on recovery.

Great to hear from you.

Any word on the usual suspects?

We're all good. I lost power for a day and had a close call with some big tree branches but we were lucky. I just can't believe the devastation to the north and south shore. Its gonna take years to come close to recovering. The beaches are all destroyed, homes, towns, etc. Just thinking of the aftermath and long term environmental effects of all the sewage, fuel, oil, garbage in the water and streets. All the beach sand in the streets can't come back to the beach before it is somehow cleaned. We need them to protect the island. I feel horrible for all the family's that suffered total losses of everything they have. If anyone needs something let me know I have power, hot water, etc I'm in eastern LI.

T just spoke to her sister. Her house was spared as it sits on a little hill and was very slightly above the storm surge.

She has no power, but has food , bottled water, and gas appliances so they can cook and stay warm.

Their son lives in the same town as RAT and her husband went to get him. That area is devastated.

RAT has more things to worry about than posting here. :-\

Finally got power back here about 30-miles west of Philadelphia.  Sandy's eye went pretty much over the house - really strange during about a 20-minute period as the wind picked up, seemed to die completely, and then kicked in again with a vengeance.  That's when the trees in the area started falling and taking out the power lines.... I really feel for everyone back in my hometown, NYC.  I worked all along the Gulf of Mexico for 6-months after Katrina and Rita came ashore in 2005; this sounds as bad if not worse than then.

I've heard from friends in the Morristown NJ area that 80% to 90% of the area is without power/gasoline.

Plenty of gas in South Jersey near Philadelphia - and it's 30-cents a gallon cheaper than in PA -- pass that along.

Hopefully this might help you guys out when finding gas:

http://www.nj.com/bergen/index.ssf/2012/10/list_of_open_gas_stations_in_bergen_county.html (http://www.nj.com/bergen/index.ssf/2012/10/list_of_open_gas_stations_in_bergen_county.html)

I know the Hess on rt4 right by the gwb is open and selling but the line there is over a couple of miles long during the day.

I also saw on NY1 that the NJ ports will be opened by today or tomorrow for the new shipments of gas to come in so lets hope that the gas issue should be cleared up soon.

If you can get to NJ, the shop rite in englewood is open with a lot of food in it.  I went there to pick stuff up and the shelves were full.  If you cant get 3 people in your car for the HOV restrictions a motorcycle is allowed to cross according to federal law.

https://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF-8&q=shop+rite+englewood&fb=1&gl=us&hq=shop+rite&hnear=0x89c2f118873d798d:0xc4c69a689e1f9bbe,Englewood,+NJ&cid=0,0,872544723516363114&ei=J3KUUOiJHPS80QGNoICoDQ&ved=0CIwBEPwSMAA

Also, seems that power just came on in fort lee on rt46 and the gas stations seem to be open there if you need gas... lines seem to be about the same as everywhere else though.

If you can make it to NJ, all the stations on rt46 right by the bridge should have gas.  They all lost power till just tonight and they should have stock as they just started selling them... i'm watching a line to one of them right now.  Around 7-8 gas stations in that one little strip right by the gwb alone... not sure how quickly it will sell out however.

You can keep Randimus' and Brian's gas, thanks.
If we could ship my Mother in Law to you we would appreciate that.
3/4 tank in the car and near full tank in the bike should hold us over until fuel starts flowing in.
Food in the fridge and food in walking distance plus some peppers, salad, herbs and celery in the garden will get us through.
We are doing great here.
No mail yet though.

I went out to Rockaway Beach today to see if theres anything i can do to help.

-FEMA and most 1st responders are not out there in as much force as they are in manhattan. DSNY has started to remove alot of the garbage that was swept up, as well as the interior of homes that people are ripping out.

-Most people have lost their belongings. most important clothing.

-Verizon and ATT have set up a mobile antennas so people have service in the area.

-There is a massive outpour of help from Brooklyn bringing food and clothing. The issue is that getting there is difficult since most access points are choked by DSNY vehicles cleaning up.

-There is no food shops, however there are a lot of places where you can get food. There are massive donations coming in from across NYC. People are having cookouts and handing out food. There is no shortage of food at all. It seems like you could get a bite to eat, for free almost anywhere. THe important thing is that the supplies keep coming in. FEMA Is not out there handing out meals. the National Guard has one station handing out food, but it is too localized.

-There is no shortage of water. There are tons of water. More than people can take. From churchs, from people driving around and handing it out and more.

-There is no shortage of people willing to help. However, there is a massive shortage of people who are able to coordinate the help effort. HOWEVER, to be quite honest, there is more help then there is need and its becoming the fat bastarad theory. Too many people can do more harm than good.

-There is no gas. Small vehicles are moving what they can to the rockaways to keep their stocks up. Its enough to work out just fine right now. It is the weekend when more people are able help vs the workweek.

I went to the local church to try and help out, but theres too many voulenteers and no one has organized anything so its a massive cluster make the beast with two backs. Im hoping to run by there tonight when its died down figure out a proper way to get the donations out there and to get thigns organized.

The BIGGEST issue is that DSNY has to clean up the garbage that is flooding the streets. Power needs to be restored so people can begin shipping in food and start working again, and the houses need to be restored. HOWEVER, the underlying issue is that there needs to be a plan of action to prepare for the next flood event.

Wow.  Glad to hear you're doing ok, considering.

And thanks He Man for your update.

I'm going to go ahead and throw out the idea of possibly having someone venture out to Rat's address.  Thoughts?
Call me meddling or a busybody but I do kinda like the Rat and am concerned like a lot of us are...  Sounds like, based on what He Man described, he can get necessities but if there's anything else we could do for him, I know many of us would step up.

Going to check my donations site from last spring.  Might be in there.

I have his address and checked the Red Cross "search" function where people would list their names but he's not there.

Got gas today. It only took me 45min to get there and back  ??? Drove my truck and parked next door. My wife and I got on the gas can line since its shorter. The car line was a mile long. I got 19 gallons had 2 -6 gallon tanks from my old boat, my wife had a 5 gallon and another 2 gallon. I hope this ends soon you can't get premium anywhere I really don't want to put regular in the new car.

T spoke to her sister again.

The town RAT lives in supposedly has power restored.

Hopefully he'll chime in.

Greetings from Gloucester Mass!!  I finally escaped the big suckage!!

Nope no joy in big tree areas...still telling us that it will be 10 days or Thanksgiving  Still 7000 out in my area of Port Washington LIPA has an attitude more worthy of a Hatian Utility after the 4th hurricane of the month

Tuesday 3:30 a.m. the cold woke me up (again) and I went out looking for an open Dunkin Donuts for coffee so I could huddle in front of my fireplace for day 8 of indoor camping  no power no heat no webzz  4 trees went down all missed my house but 1 trashed my neighbors garage

so  back to other story....I drive by a tanker truck and see it filling up the local Shell Station....I get 3 coffees and at 3:45 am I parked next to the gas pumps and I wait until they open at 7

filled the car up....can now escape the suckage zone, heard about the noreaster headed our way...loaded the wife and Najee in the car at 2 am this morning and am now at house in Gloucester where I am reacclimating to life in the 21st century

I am far far luckier than many of my neighbors whose houses were crushed and torn open by trees.... and the many people down at water level

right now I am getting caught up with work backlogs....hope all others are faring well!

NY Gov Cuomo released the following statement on Nassau County, Suffolk County, and New York City implementing plans to reduce gas lines in the region:

"Due to additional fuel supply disruptions caused by the Nor'Easter which hit the region last night, Nassau and Suffolk Counties and the City of New York have decided to implement temporary fuel management measures to reduce lines at retail gasoline stations. The plans are regionally synchronized and all will have the same rules. The plans will impose odd-even rules on the purchase of gasoline for non-commercial vehicles and have been designed in coordination. Westchester, Rockland, and Orange will not have fuel management measures at this time. The state will continue to coordinate among local governments, as well as the federal government, to ensure that the any fuel management measures are planned and implemented in conjunction with the Coast Guard, the U.S. Department of Energy and the petroleum industry."
