Two weeks ago i became the absolutely proud owner of a 96 M900. I'm wanting to turn this beauty into a everyday functioning show bike. I'm thinking about going with a futuristic Street fighter/ Crotch Rocket look. Sleek and short yet loud and mean. I already know I want to do a tail chop with bullet turn signals, powder coat the frame, put either pro taper contour bars (Ive always raced MX and love the feel of those) or clip on's. Install a carbon fiber front fender, and windscreen on it, with red and black chain/levers. But When it comes to the exhaust or engine mods I'm clueless. I love the look of the CBR600's exhaust where it comes out right under the tail, but i haven't been able to find anthing like that around. I also want to change my instrument cluster but not sure how to do that or what to even change it too. Pretty much what I'm asking is for you to picture your ideal 900 monster and simply post what it would look like and maybe even where to find the parts. Send me your suggestions and Ill upload pictures of how it turns out every step of the way.

Well, you can't really have that CBR look... well you could, but the rear wheel would mash the piss out of the can - frame set up is not buit to accomodate and exhaust in that spot, so clearance would be an issue.

Plenty of other options though - good thing about your bike is that any slip-on cans made for a pre 696 double sided swingarm (DSS) Monster will cross fit. High, low, carbon, steel, Ti, megaphone etc etc.

For the more modern look - couple folks have managed to replace the stock headlight with one from a KTM Super Duke - one's for sale in the parts section presently.
Gauges, you've got plenty of options there too. Many folks have swapped out gauges - Motogadget is popular for that

They also make switchgear and other farkles like an RFID 'key'

Run a search in Tech and tutorials  and you should find some gauge swap info

If you're so inclined I think finding a "part out" 999 or 749 exhaust might do the trick with, again, a lot of modification.  I wonder how this would look too.

He's got a hoop. An under tail set up will be extra problems. There really no place for it

When I was planning this all out in my head, I didnt really think about how close the rear fender was to the tail, so a high center mount exhaust is def out of the picture, but do they make any 2 in 1 high mount exhaust like a dirt bike? And what about fairings?

That exhaust is tits! Would look cool mounted low too (like a Buell) but might have clearance issues...One on each side? But for that price he could have a full racing system.

not sure how this guy pulled off the under seat exhaust.  Not a "hooped" Monster, but it is a DSS.  Looks like the rear subframe has been modified.

Modified sub frame, moved some electrics, the oil catch on the case breather and the under seat pan, custom seat.

Obviously it can be done, especially on a non-hoop moster - but that took a good bit of fussing (and $$$) to do.

    I've been looking around a lot the past couple weeks and have seen a ton of different cosmetic mods you can do to the ducatis, but what about mechanical? I love the get up and go feeling the m900 has, but i cant seem to get it over 120mph. is that because of the aerodynamics of the bike, not having a fairing or windscreen or is it governed? It feels like it should be able to go way faster than that ( Not that I would go that fast, I'm a law  abiding motorcyclist  [Dolph]   [roll]) And with a seat cowl do you need to get a single seat or does it rest over the passenger seat.

The seat cowl sits over the passenger area, secured by two bolts.

It's a 16 year old, carbureted , air cooled 2v bike... 120 is a pretty solid showing.

Absolutelty! It just feels like its not pulling as hard as it should. Almost like its not letting itself hit full potential. Either that or when im riding it the ducati fever hits me. Not sure which one it is, but.....Going faster is def fun

Well, few easy things to do
- new fuel filter - cheap and never hurts
- Any idea about the conditions of jetting? It's quite possible they are in need of replacement and you're down on some power as a result.
- Air filter clean?

The first option is cheaper and has nice power for the street. The long manifolds restrict power but give nice low down torque. The power drop off can be mitigated to a degree with a larger, modified airbox.

I really don't have a budget in mind right now. I'm just finding out what my options are and working from there. I'm you with a low paying salary position and a fiancé lol
