Title: Your father and you -- have you gone riding together?
Post by: MotoCreations on June 30, 2008, 01:33:04 PM
posting here -->  MotoMilt's B'day Surprise (http://twistingasphalt.com/index.php/archives/2008/06/28/motormilts-birthday-surprise/)

Dylan at TwistingAsphalt.com (http://twistingasphalt.com) has done some Ducati videos, reviews and rides in the SoCal scene and is definitely a first class Ducatista.  I've been reading his blog for years now and never realized MotoMilt was his father.  Article above is in regard to the recognition of his father and his gift to him in appreciation thereof.

Sometimes we all forget about our fathers as we are growing up and only truly understand them once they have passed away (admittedly with myself) or when some of us finally become parents.  It's great to hear someone speak of their father and hearing about the great relationship they have as best friends.

QUESTION:  When was the last time you went for a motorcycle ride with your dad (or family)?

Well, my dad doesn't ride.

I did take him for a ride once a few years ago when I had my M900.

He didn't like it [laugh]

He needs that feeling of protection a cage gives you.

At least he gave it a shot though :)

last time i was in KS--last summer.

my dad rode a honda 50 before i was born and only started back up a couple of years ago.  glad we can talk bikes now, as it's easy to talk about.

kind of wish we had that when i was a kid, but grateful for it now.

QUESTION:  When was the last time you went for a motorcycle ride with your dad (or family)?

I rode with my dad all the time when I was a kid.  The last time though (4 y/o), we got pulled over.  I was sitting on the gas tank.  The cops in Escondido didn't like that so they made me ride on the back.  It was the longest ride home as I was hanging on for dear life!

It took nearly 25 years until I could ride with my dad again..this time with my own bike.  We met in Phoenix and rode from there to Flagstaff via Sedona.  Couldn't have asked for a better day.  It was sunny, not too hot and we were the only ones on the road for several mile stretches.  :)

Then a few years ago..after getting my Duc..we met halfway between Phoenix & Tucson.  It was a nice ride down the back road into Tucson and through Gates Pass to his house.

Not terribly long rides but..I'll always remember those times..just me and dad.   [moto]

[cheeky]

no, she's a nutter in general.

for example, she demanded that i take her to the most recent TOOL concert i went to.

she just sat there, cutely in her seat, bobbing her head to the music... smitten by MJK.   [laugh]

my dad just shook his head when she said she was going...

I took my dad out on a cold, sunny and icey December 23rd 2006. He had never even sat on anything larger than a Vespa in his life. He had the ride of his life, I've never seen my old man so happy.

He said he liked how the S4Rs accelerated. He was a model pillion. I love the guy.  [thumbsup]

We just rode last week. He just sold his last bike a few days ago and is waiting to pick up the new toy a Vulcan 900 classic. Its a nice bike and I'm hoping to steal a little seat time.

My Dad rides with me everytime I ride. He died in May of 2001 . When I ride I always take Dad with me on back. I miss my Dad teeribly. He was my best friend. So having his spirit on board with me makes me feel much better. When I see a Deer or Wild Turkey I'll say did you see that Dad. My father and I both loved the woods and wild life.

I'm teaching my dad to ride on my 800. He rode 30 some odd years ago when he was a teenager and wants to get back on. So awesome!

My dad has taken every I've owned for a spin except the GS1150, but doesn't actually ride.

I am the only one on my side of the family who rides.  On my wife's side two cousins used to ride.  One wanted to buy a bike again.  Her husband won't let her >:(

he's been riding over 30 years, he just got that BMW, and has a 37 harley flat head, 78 shovel, and 91 harley full dresser.
he's been to sturgis every year since 80, and mom goes with him when work permits.

for being such a big bike, that bmw can run  [thumbsup]

Ridden with my dad plenty of times... been awhile since are last one though.
But soon it will be dad, brother, sister, girlfriend, and me all on a ride. (All w/ own bikes too... not just passengers).

How many of you have RACED with your Dad?
I have... he won.. (He even block-passed and wrecked me for the win)

Not yet but soon.   After three years of me telling him he needs to get one, he's looking to buy a Multistrada.
He's already signed up for the MSF class (he hasn't ridden a motorcycle since the early '80's).

My father refuses to get on the bike.  My mother on the other hand, loves it!  I wonder why everyone here whose father will not, has a mother who will?  Opposites attract maybe...

I was going to get her a MSF gift cert. for her 50th bday this year, but decided against it.  I know she would have loved it, but my father flipped out when I told him.  Maybe next year

I was probably around 4.  Dad rode a Sportster and my mother rode a Honda Scrambler.   I'd hang on behind him wearing a little plastic football helmet.  [laugh]

Dad would love to get his hands on one of my Ducs but I don't want him killing himself.  He is "coaching" my sister who is just learning to ride on things like how she shouldn't use the front brake.  I have to drag him out of the 1960's before I'll break down and let him take a Duc out.  He thinks my sister's old, tired baby Ninja is powerful, so I want him to get in more current seat time before he breaks his neck and my bike.

My dad bought a brand new Honda Shadow this year, his first bike since I was a wee one.

We rode on it together when I went to visit him a few weeks ago, then he let me ride it. I've never ridden anything bigger than a 250 while not on the back, so it was pretty fun!

In this pic I tried hard to look like a badass toothless harley guy. Didn't work.

My grandfather rode, Dad rode, I ride, my son rides a little (doesn't own a bike), and both grandsons have riden as passengers on my wife's tail while I tagged along on my bike.

One of my earliest memories was climbing through the tube over the bomb-bay in his B-25 in 1944.  Another was waking up in a tent on a sand bar during a canoe camping trip with my Dad when I was 4 years old.  When I took my six year old grand-daughter on the same trip two years ago, my 89 year old father dropped us off and picked us up three days down stream.  I camped with Dad hundreds of times.  We never rode together but whether it's riding or doing someother life-long shared activity, I think that a close relationship with a father is one of the best parts of life.  When Dad died, at home with most of us there, at 89, we had no unfinished business and nothing but wonderful memories.
