Hello all.
I am trying to sort out some issues on a 2001 monster 900ie dark. 14000 miles
at the top of the list currently is the neutral switch. I know everyone is going to tell me not to rely on it anyway. I am a little bit picky about my equipment and would like to resolve if it is a neutral switch. or possibly the gear selector spring and ball.
Here goes.
It seams particularly easy to put it in neutral (ive been experimenting for a while)between 1st and 2nd without having the light come one. I can roll up to a red light and have it in nuetral without the light on. just for fun i will then rev the engine and it seems like the vibration causes something to move just enough to turn the light on.
i can also very easily find neutral and have the light come on. i have been practicing being more deliberate with the shifter but it is tricky to be deliberate in trying to find neatral without bouncing from 1st to 2nd. I believe the switch to be mechanical and possibly spring loaded and possibly sticking.
the only other problem i have found with the transmission is a false neutral that pops up between either 4th and 5th or 5th and 6th that i bump into if i don't clutch in to shift up.
im not sure if this will help but i replaced a the clutch plates and basket (with barnet units) at 10000 miles and the old setup was beat. I bought the bike with 9000miles on it.
Chances are it's a bad switch or connection.
The false neutral is not related.
what size is the nut attached to the sensor??? its tight back there and knowing what size socket to use would be helpfull...I might cut a socket to make it the right size as far as depth and clearance on the shock/spring
IIRC the wires are soldered to the switch which makes using a socket difficult.
I think it's 13mm hex. It's been years since I messed with mine.
A member here just messed with his... http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=60462.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=60462.0)
Maybe pm him and ask the size.

From what I've experienced Ducatis are just prone to false neutrals between the upper gears, particularly between 5th and 6th. The solution is to just shift harder...clutch or no clutch.
Earlier models are hard wired to the switch. The '01 has a connector. Try cleaning the connection first.

i have cleaned the connection. i am gonna go after it. being able to disconnect should make it easier than the others but space is tight back there.
Thanks guys
Sorry I don't have a parts diagram or service manual. Is the neutral switch the sensor/wire that goes into the back side of the engine? back around the rear shock area?
privateer...... it is

13mm. sockets don't work, need to use a standard box wrench, the closed side, and cut a slot in the end so get it over the wire. the plug is bigger than 13mm so you can't just slide the wrench over the plug. and the open end of the wrench is too fat to fit into the recess of the engine.
if the problem is that the light only comes on some of the time, it probably just needs to be "adjusted", it's a semi-common problem. the gasket/washer/shim is too thick, and needs to be thinner, and only by a small amount.
just remove the sensor, remove the shim from the sensor, and sand down both sides of it a bit to give it a fresh surface and make it thinner, then reinstall the same as it came apart. should do the trick nicely
thanks
