Title: Tyre valve stem replacement
Post by: WTSDS on December 09, 2012, 02:15:01 PM
My 12 year old Monster has its original tyre valve stems and lately the rear tyre has been losing pressure very slowly, like 5 PSI over a week. Thinking it was just a leaky valve I replaced it but discovered the thread inside the stem was dodgy.

Putting on a new stem cap has solved the problem temporarily.

Are the ordinary rubber mushroom shaped auto stems OK as a replacement or do I need the original type with the locknut ? Of course the front wheel needs the angled variety 'coz of the twin brake rotors but the straight type seems it would be OK at the rear.

I've never seen anyone use an all rubber valve stem.

It might work.

I'm pretty sure that the rubber stems need a larger hole.

Thanks guys.

I've just invested a whopping 15 cents in a new valve cap. I'll worry about getting the stem replaced after Xmas.

Why not just replace the valve core?

Tool #1 might correct that.

I really need to learn how to read more carefully

Replaced the new valve stem and re-used the valve core - all is beautiful, my rear tyre is now holding it's pressure.

Hmm? By re-using the old core you saved $2.07, including tax, for a pack of four. You also avoided worrying about what to do with the three remaining ones.  [clap]

That will hold the fort in the meantime.
It's a safety issue and they are getting long in the tooth. Odds are you'll be fine, but maybe take it as a caution from your bike. You don't want a sudden loss of pressure when you least expect it. I would buy some nice valves (in your choice of colour) from our sponsors and get them fitted next tyre change as part of periodic maintenance.
Just my conservative opinion.

The valve which I replaced 18 months ago was from a pack of 4 I bought about 15 years ago, i.e. almost spanking new :-)

I still have to worry about the other 3 tho. There's two wheelbarrows and a quad 'bike with a trailer on my GF's property which need the tyres pumped up now and then - I expect when things get serious those nearly new valves will get put into service. I will let you know when and if I squander any more valves.

My mistake. Obviously you have a plan, and to squander, at least for the short term, is not part of it. It must be in my DNA to waste money because I could never bring myself to be a cheapskate, but then I also know I'll never be rich. You, on the other hand, are on your way to financial independence.  ;D
