Title: Headlight shutoff switch
Post by: He Man on December 31, 2012, 05:00:20 PM
I think the HIDs have to much of a draw on my system and is a huge factor in me having starting issues and there is plenty of room in the left handle bar for a mini switch.

My question is how should I wire the switch? I have a standard automotive relay that powers the ballast directly off of the battery.

Should I wire it to break the ground that goes to the relay? or break the power at the high beam/low beam switch? or can i break the ground at the highbeam/lowbeam switch? Or does it even really matter?

I just want to run the least amount of wires as possible and get it to work and if anyone has a link to the smallest switch they can find, that would be awesome too. I planned on cannibalizing a radio shack rocker switch to fit in there.

What is triggering the relay you have?

You could use the brake light circuit and a couple of diodes to make it latch up when you brake.

The original power to the head lamp is the trigger on since its a DRL system.

That seems like I would have even more wires than just breaking the contact at the high/lo switch no?

Before i even go there, can i even break the power to the light at the left handle bar switch?

Not really an answer to your question, but a possible answer to your starting problem.  Run a ground wire from a through bolt on the starter directly to the battery negative and see what happens.  If it works, then you can work on a neat, tidy solution.

As far as the relay for your headlight goes, post your wiring diagram.  A switch in series with whatever wire you have going to terminal 85 should work.

Give me a call and I can give you a hand.

I used up all the 4 gauge wire (that stuff aint exactly cheap!) to rerun the wire from the relay to the positive side of the battery. I cranked her today and she was cranking very very well. Steady voltage at 12.9v  and nothing under 10v while cranking.

i dont want to run an extra set of wires off 85 on the relay because that would require two runs of wire into the left switch ( unless theres another place where the switch can be hidden well and have good access to it).

this is how my head lights are wired up... i can technically break 86 without issue right? or is there an issue to doing this?

I have one of the mini push button switches installed on my left side for a fan relay control switch.  Jim keeps a good supply of quality electrical parts and loom supplies.

I have an earlier Monster (2000) and I lucked out and found a EURO headlight switch control.  It gives you the option to turn off the headlights.  It works really well and I too am using an HID.  Not sure if it will work on your bike, but it was plug & play on mine.

Altho not exactly answering your question I just cut the wire inside the headlight shell which goes to the low beam, inserted some wiring which goes to a Harley D 3 position indicator switch mounted on the left side of the handlebars and removed the parking light globe. Centre position has no lights up front and either left or right position has low beam on. Everything else works as normal, i.e. flasher and high beam. Having no parking light may not be legal but I don't give a damm.

I have a 1998 ST2 Euro spec that has the on/off switch.

I might be willing to switch ( ;D) out if it's plug and play.

I installed a switch, the blue/yellow is the ground. I just kill the ground and it works beautifully.  Ofcourse my switch is totally crooked, but that can be fixed when i got some black sealant. And since the switch is flat and the lights are round, i need sealent to even it out. It aint all that purdy, but it'll do.

howie the starter works fine. Strange enough, without the spark plugs in the starter will crank the motor all day.

After what i thought fixed my problem ( the loose spark plug) im still having difficulty starting. Now im trying to track it down to something else that is causing a hard start. though its not nearly as difficult as before.
