Title: switching from synthetic to dino oil
Post by: Howley on January 09, 2013, 05:20:10 AM
I've heard switching from synthetic oil to regular oil can cause big problems. Is it true or just a sales pitch?

It used to be that synthetics and dino oils didn't play well together and could have compatibility issues.

I'm not aware of any synthetic that isn't completely compatible now.

When I bought my secondhand 'bike 6 years ago it had just had a service and oil change with synthetic. Next few oil changes were dino, then I won a container of synthetic in a raffle at local DOCV meeting, used that and have since gone back to dino. No problems as far as I can tell.

When I do an oil and filter change I also drain the oil cooler and then take out the spark plugs and turn over the motor with the starter for a few seconds to get every possible drop of old oil out.

Prehistoric times... :P

Seriously, it was when synthetics were first coming on the scene..

I've serviced a few customers' bikes, and one of my own, that didn't shift well with nonsynthetic oils for what that's worth.  No compatibility issues that I'm aware of, though.

Motul makes synthetic "blend" oils. If you're that worried switch to that before you go straight to dino.

Personally I dont think its a big deal

if the bike is a 4valve model YOU MUST USE FULL Synthetic or you will see expensive problems , older 2v models will be OK on Dino pil but they also run better on synthetic

Kind of curious about this - my understanding is running mineral after running the old synthetics would cause the oil to collude, some leftovers would turn into a sort of jelly that clogs up the oil pump and passages.  But other than that, are there difference in valve seating, wear patterns, etc?

not sure how old that info is but consumer reports said mixing won't do anything. The important thing they stressed was making sure they were the same weight.
