Title: S2R Clutch gone to shit?
Post by: ashes to ashes on January 19, 2013, 10:39:56 PM
hi guys,
I'm a new owner of an "08 S2R 1K, it has 15500 K's on it (300 are mine). This is my first Duc but I am a long time fan and am aware of the dry clutch having it's own personality traits.
I have been having some annoyances with it though, the other day i started the bike, the neutral light was on but it was obviously in gear as when i hit the tit on the starter the bike started to ride away on its own, I shit myself, grabbed onto it and pulled in the clutch, then it stalled out all of this much to the amusement of some teenage onlookers. I thought the automatic starter wouldn't work if it was in gear?!
Also when I am not  moving it can be quite difficult getting it into neutral or out of neutral. ALSO when i take off there is a loud whine up until i let the clutch out completely. I'm no mechanic but i can swing a wrench and i feel I'm capable of changing the clutch myself but i do not want to spend the money needlessly especially since Yesterday our doc told us my wife is 5 weeks pregnant with our first baby ;D and about a month ago i spent $350 on some Rizoma "Drop" indicators.

Thankyou in Advance
Ash.

If your neutral light is on the ECU thinks your bike is in neutral and will start.  Good procedure is to always pull the clutch when starting.  Trouble getting in and out of neutral is probably either air in the clutch hydraulic circuit or a leaking clutch slave.  Bleed the clutch first.  If the noise you hear is more like a groan, not unusual.  If it bothers you blowing the dust out of the clutch may help.  If not, post back  If the whine is high pitched you may need a through out bearing.  Our sponsor California Cycleworks carries a replacement.  http://ca-cycleworks.com/6201 (http://ca-cycleworks.com/6201)

Congrats on the new baby [beer]

S2R 800 would have a wet clutch, so there shouldn't be any dust....doh...I'm an idjit. Misread.

If it doesn't slip, chances are the discs are fine, and you should bleed as howie suggested.

It does sound like you need a throwout bearing...easy fix once the case cover is off. You can buy a gasket from ca-cycleworks when you order the bearing, or you can use sealer like the factory.

Don't over tighten the clutch spring screws when you put it back together. They've been known to break.

my first Monster was a 99 900 with dry clutch.

it had a tendency to give a false neutral and yes, once I did have the bike do the same thing that happened to you, except I wasn't on it and when it lurched forward the suicide stand snapped up and smash... a drop.

after that. I always pulled in the clutch to start no matter what the neutral light showed.

When you say blow the clutch out is that just with an air compressor while bike is running or off?
Does Ca cycle works ship to Australia?

QuoteCongrats on the new baby
thankyou

Off will be fine.  Yes, they will ship.  If you remove yours and take it to a bearing shop they can match it by number.
