Title: Monster won't shut off
Post by: wec_032 on January 20, 2013, 05:36:50 PM
I started my S4R this morning without any problems, but I couldn't shut it off.  I tried the ignition switch, it kept running like it was dieseling.  I tried the kill switch, same thing.  I had to stall it out to get it to stop.  Any ideas?  Thank you.

Was the starter motor still turning?  What was working/not working on the instrument panel when you shut the key off?

Dieseling is what it sais, process of burning fuel by self compression, possible with diesel engines where the fuelpump is driven by the camshaft or crankshaft, thus supplying fuel. Can happen with petrol engines too but than you have to have a ignition source, normally the spark plug but with wrongly adjusted engines afterglowing from built up residue on the piston can ignite incoming fuel/air mixtures. This only can happen with older carburetted machines not having fuel ignition. S4R`s are electronically operated fuel injection machines... Hence, your problem is most likely not `dieseling` but electronical. Look at Howies advice and see what happens when you shut off. To me it looks like loose/corroded cabling issues from the front end to the control unit (Lock and kill switch cabling go through the same connector / cable bundle). Keep us posted.

I have heard of the starter relay contacts spot-welding themselves together.  You would still have the starter motor turning the engine over after the ignition was switched off.  If that is what happened you want to remove the battery asap.
