Title: Tool advice: manual torque wrench
Post by: memper on January 27, 2013, 08:50:08 AM
Lets see if i can explain clearly. If i twist the handle with the zero hash mark to say, the 50 lb hash mark on shaft, the top edge of the handle is below the 50 hash mark. If i twist the handle so the top edge of the handle lines up with the 50 hash mark, the handle reads 54.
This was a good wrench purchased from Fastenal. Perhaps mine is defective?

Hard to say.

Do you have anyone nearby you can compare yours to regarding accuracy?

If its from fastenal, i would check with their other stock. unless you ordered online. I would go with the hash marks, not the top of the spindle, but if you really wanted to make sure, get it calibrated.

If a tool supply shop can't help you, call a Fixed Based Operator (gas station) at your local airport and ask one of the mechanics if they can do it at their shop or where they get theirs calibrated.  I had mine calibrated a few years ago at Flightcraft in Portland.  My wrench was about 10-15 years old at the time, never calibrated, and it was dead on.  If you run into a brick wall, let me know where you're located...I might have an Army aviation connection in your area that can tell me where the mechs get wrenches calibrated.

You can just do it using simple math.

the torque at the head is equal to the center of the head to the point of applied force x the force. This is your ft-lb value. Just weigh something of know nweight, slap it on tehre and see when it clicks and adjust accordingly.

I get it. So hang a 40 lb dumbbell off the handle.
Just saw a you tube vid on it. Length of wrench x weight of object divided by 12.
Thx

Yup, just make sure you verify the weight and apply the force at the length of the torque arm.

Once you know how to calibrate it, youll notice that even the cheap ones are pretty damn accurate.
