Title: Checking the valves, thoughts on clips in or out
Post by: Blue on January 30, 2013, 07:11:12 PM
I am planning on checking my valves again soon on my 2000 M900ie.  Looking through my notes from the last year, I noticed when I checked my valve clearances on the vertical head, the valves measured about a thou larger with the clips out than in.  Strangely, it did not matter on the horizontal head as I got the same readings either way.  Reading through my Ducati service manual, it does not specify one way or the other.  I assume from the pictures, they have the check with the clips in.  So, what to do and why?
Thanks! [thumbsup]

I check with the clips out.

out.  it can make a big difference, esp if the clips are twisted.

Quote All.
Clips out, since I'm going to have to go ahead and pull and lap and refit and check and pull and lap and... so on... the shims anyway, and the clips just get in the way.
Never though about the fact the clips do bind, and if bound will mess with the measurement...

Thanks everyone for the responses.  I does make it easier to leave the clips out.
I double check the manual, it does have the check with the clips in.  Only when adjusting the valves do they mention removing the clips.

out.  it can make a big difference, esp if the clips are twisted.

This is what I noticed when I was trying to figure out what was causing the difference.  I could see that the clips had a bit of a twist to them.

Regarding the clearances, how is the binding of clips overwhelmed when the motor is operating?  Temperature?
Just thinking about openers, clips out 0.005", clips in 0.004".  Fire it up and it starts at 0.004" but runs at 0.005"?  I know that as the engine warms the clearance grows, but anyone have a theory?
Thanks.

IMO, the forces when the engine is hot/running far overwhelm the clips.

Hi guys , can someone explain to me what is the maximum clearence  that the opening and closing shims must have  based on this print screen from the service manual for a monster 696? Thank you very much  ;D

That's telling you that if you're checking and you have .003-.006" on the opener, and .0-.008 on the closer, they're OK...leave them alone.

When you adjust they want .004-.006" for openers, and 0-.002" for closers.

In practice, the closer you get to .004 opener, and 0 closer, the smoother it will run.

Ok thank you , being my first time i will try to measure the clearence first  to see if my valves are in spec....however , the 696 starts and runs great, it has 22k miles on the clock...i hope i dont need to change or adjust any valve...

The spec on the closer is wrong IMO.

If my valves had over .001 closer they'd get adjusted...even if I had to pay someone to do it.

I said, IMO. Those are Ducati's 'relaxed' specs, They did that to reduce service costs. The old spec on closers was 0-.0005 IIRC.

Using them won't do any damage. Your bike will run better at the adjusting spec than the checking spec.
