They've got 42 psi (cold) stamped on them, which is a ton higher than the 31 & 34 I've been using in the metzelers for the past decade. Should I believe them?

I've always ridden them at 32-34R, 31-33F (cold temps)
The 42 psi references max pressure.
If the manufacturer of a bike recommends higher than 42 psi it would mean that tire was not suitable for that bike.
I run the same pressures on my Monster as JJJ
Cool, I'll keep them in my normal range then. How'd you feel about them overall?

Yep - read more closely. You'll see that it's noted to be max. All tires will note the max - none AFAIK list a recommended as that's based on bike weight, rider weight, blah blah.
And I'm in that same pressure camp for the monster.

Not quite like the Powers I've had on other bikes but I've never been able to make them squirm on the BMW and I've tried.
31-32 front, 34-36 rear depending on load. Definitely not 42 :).
Great road tyres. For just riding in the twisties or wanting pretty good road tyres on a Monster on the track then I prefer Pures, but it's hard to argue with the grip and longevity of the Road2s and I believe Road3s are just as good, but slightly better in the wet.
I talked with the Avon tech at the Long Beach M/C show. He said I should be running around 41 PSI in my rear on my Kawi ZRX1100. lClose to that in the front. I had been running 38 rear and 36 front. Got 8K out of the last rear Storm II Ultra and 10K out of the one before that.
He said to run the tire enough to warm it up really well. Stop and check pressures shortly after stopping. If pressure rises more than 4-5% when warm, the tire is underinflated.
That should work on every tire.
I ran 29 front 31 rear on my pr2's and got 8000km of good all-round riding. However the grip wasn't confidence inspiring (for me).
I just fitted a set of Racetec K3's last week. The difference was instantly noticable. turn in was sharp as a tack, direction changes easier.
given the pr2's lasted 11.5 weeks, and no abnormal wear (no flat spot in the middle either) The difference I was expecting was not as huge as the difference I experienced within 40km of riding.
I think that power 3's would be the better choice in the michelin brand. I do like the pilot powers. I also love the Metzelers. In my experience, Metzeler always had a grippier tyre but wore quicker than the michelins. The feedback from the metzeler is miles ahead IMO, than the michelin. Even the sportec m5 is a good road tyre. Surprising. much better in cold wet weather than the k3's (for obvious reason)
