Title: S4RS retrofit steel tank in progress . . . Post by: uglyducky on February 13, 2013, 11:13:50 AM couple pics from the ongoing saga of getting rid of this damn polycarbonate tank. current fuel pump will bolt right up and fuel lines will be retrofit with QD as well. just need to tweak bottom contour a little to allow for all the junk crammed in this bike under the tank:

it will be easier. ;D Nice work BTW. ;) Title: Re: S4RS retrofit steel tank in progress . . . Post by: DucRS on February 13, 2013, 06:44:14 PM Hmmm..
What bike was the metal tank from? How bout we turn this into a " How to " thread with plenty of pics and info. ;D [popcorn] Title: Re: S4RS retrofit steel tank in progress . . . Post by: Bill in OKC on February 13, 2013, 08:27:16 PM What he said. [thumbsup]
Any problems clearing the battery, ecu, rear valve cover? I made a S2R tank fit, but no metal fabricating skills here. edit - and how does the seat fit against the tank? Title: Re: S4RS retrofit steel tank in progress . . . Post by: graydo on February 14, 2013, 08:40:02 AM and what about weight and fuel capacity? any benefits there?

Post by: uglyducky on February 15, 2013, 12:14:42 AM Hmmm.. tank is from an 02 620. my understanding is that all FI tanks from 2001 until d/c'd are identical. the issue, as mentioned in the post above is clearance. the bottom contour of the metal tanks does not allow for clearance of battery, ecu, etc. therefore, the pan must be cut and reformed which is what this particular fitting was meant to address. i will post up more info/pics when the welder gets it back to me. as far as capacity and weight, i think i was initially gaining a few more drops of capacity in the metal tank but now with new lower pan i may very well lose it. yes, it is going to be a bit more weight but one complaint i've never had about this bike is that it was too heavy [coffee]What bike was the metal tank from? How bout we turn this into a " How to " thread with plenty of pics and info. ;D [popcorn] as long as the weight added isn't in rotating mass i don't suspect it'll be too bad. and, hell, i'd take an extra 10 lbs to get rid of this F#@$&% stock tank once and for all. as for seat and tank fitment, the seats on all FI bikes are the same so there's no issue there. just have to fabricate a new rear tank mount bracket on the tank side as the old poly tank's doesn't line up and the original from steel tank frame bracket robs a half an inch that can't be spared. The '00-'01 M900i.e. tanks have a different bottom to them and won't clear the '02 & up battery on the V head arrangement. They were meant for the older carbed air box w/the battery standing upright @ the back. The '01 MS4 had a different bottom to it also and only fit that bike at that time. Then, for '02... someone got wise. They made 1 tank bottom for all the Monster tanks and all was happiness again. They ran that until mid-2005 when the EVIL plastic tanks emerged. This is from my memory and I like booze so take it w/a grain. Title: Re: S4RS retrofit steel tank in progress . . .
