Title: New code card/key issues
Post by: BlackdogGS on March 10, 2013, 10:47:22 AM
I just got my new code card and keys from SOS diagnostics.  I have to program the new key.  In order to go this I must go to menu and pick "code" which should come right after "time set".  I can find all the functions except "code", its just not coming up.  What am I doing wrong?

It started warming up and I can't start the bike.

I'm able to enter the code now but im still unable to start the bike.  One thing I noticed is now when I turn the ignition on it says "key 1" than counts down from 30 to 1.  It never did that before.  Any ideas?

You've basically entered programming/diagnostics mode on your bike, so now every-time you start the bike it'll ask you to enter your key code before being able to start the bike. It's counting down from 30 because its still on that step in the reprogramming of the new key, you still haven't complete the programming, but your close. The process to program your key is in your manual. I haven't programmed a key in a little over a year (so these instructions aren't exact), but from what I remember you need to insert and your first key 1 enter the code, turn it off and on the count down will start and you must turn it off a second time before it counter hit's 0 and immediately insert your 2nd key. Again, this process is outlined step by step in your manual. And from what I remember you had to be faster then you think when switching out the keys for the new programming to take. Once you've successfully programmed the key, the bike will display something like "Program OK" or "Successful" and it will exit program/diagnostics mode. Then the bike will start normally when you turn the key.

Problem solved,  I have three working keys now and the original code.  i ended up trucking the bike to Canby Oregon 100 miles away.  One of the OEM keys they made for me would go in the ignition but not turn.  The only way to solve this was to take the bike there.  SOS Diognostics stayed open late for me.  They got the key working and matched the keys to the bike.  They did that so fast I'm not sure how they did it.  I had already entered the code in the bike  successfully  so they did not have to do that part.  So I'm good to go for this riding season!

If SOS Diagnostics can retrieve a code from a key why can't a Ducati dealership?  I went to 3 dealerships on this issue and they all said I needed a new dash, ECM, etc and the bill would be well over $3,000.  They also mentioned the bike was worth far less with only one key.

Bullshit, I bought my bike with only one black key. It never impacted performance.

Anyone have those 'how to program a key' instructions.

I have a bike with a red key and code card, would like to throw in a black key to the mix as the red key is so high and mighty.
