Title: Tank Leak Gas - O-Ring Fail?
Post by: Goat_Herder on April 01, 2013, 01:19:09 AM
Bike: S2R1000
Mileage: 7,500

Over the winter, I started smelling gas fume from the S2R after I ride it.  I didn't think much of it.  Today was a great day in Seattle, almost 70F, which is very unusual for Spring here.  I took the chance and took it out for a spin in the back roads.

But when I got home the gas smell got pretty strong and then it started leaking a bit just below the tank hinge.  It wasn't too bad at all.  I didn't even noticed it until I came back out into the garage for something and saw a small wet spot.  When I got down to take a close look, I heard a very faint hissing sound.  I opened the gas lid to let the pressure out of the tank and the hissing sound was gone.  The hissing would come back after a few minutes but not as loud.  Then the sound and leak would stop.

I feared the worst - cracked hinge or some sort of tank failure.  This is what I found when I lifted the tank.

It seems to me that this could be a failure of the O-ring around the fuel pump(?) that resulted in the leak.  Part# 886.4.049.1A.  Can anyone confirm?

Thx,

Tony

Either the o-ring failed, or the pump mounting flange on the tank has warped meaning the tank has failed. The hinges on the plastic tanks don't fail.

If the bike is less than 5 years old with less than 50,000 miles it should be covered under warranty.

The extended terms of the settlement have not ended, so you have a little more time.

I'd have a dealer look at it before you decide to fix it yourself.

Take lots of pics.

Thanks DP.  The tank was replaced almost 2 years ago, due to the usual expanding issue.  It has expanded again to the point that the 2 rubber frame rest no long fits on the frame.  I also had to remove the key lock housing to access the tank latch.  Perhaps the expanding tank had something to do with the leaking.

Regardless, I will call my local dealer for next step.  Thanks for the feedback, DP.
