Title: 695 Died on me while I was riding.
Post by: hansumyo on July 02, 2008, 10:03:31 PM
I've noticed a couple of other threads on here about bikes not starting up.  I was riding not too long ago to a friends house when my 695 inexplicably died on me.  Headlights and other lights working but engine would not start back up even while coasting.  Luckily I was in a neighborhood and not going 75 on the highway when this happened to me.  I got it towed to my local dealer (free since bike was still under warranty) and the mechanic eventually diagnosed that the cable running (from the battery to the starter? engine? forgot exactly what he said) had lost connection due to the bolt holding it in place had slowly worked itself loose.

If you lift up your tank and stand on the right side of your bike, look for the fuse cover.  Look for fuse labeled 5A on the far left side.  Now look directly above it and you'll see a black wire held in place by a bolt.  Apparently this bolt/screw? and the one on the right side across from it had slowly come undone according to the mechanic.  Apparently this was due to engine vibration but he couldn't say for sure.  Anyways, he tightened them back and replaced the one that fell completely out.

Earlier before this incident I also had a day where the engine seemed to keep cutting out and then coming back on again.  This happened about 10 times.  But the next day the bike was fine again.  I attributed it at the time to a bad batch of gas but I'm guessing that's probably when the connectors were starting to come loose.

Anyways.  I'm not sure if this is the reason any of you other guys are having problems with your bike not starting but I just wanted to throw my experience out there.

Thanks for posting up, it's always good to get symptoms matched up with the problems.

+1 on the thanks for posting.

My S2R is at Ducpond in Winchester VA right now for the same symptoms.  I also had to have it towed, but was on a major highway going about 65 when it cut out.

I'll also post when the problem is resolved.
