Title: Cracked LH engine cover
Post by: LowThudd on April 05, 2013, 01:02:00 PM
I am looking at possibly buying a Fixer '98 M900. It was laid down and has a cracked LH engine cover. First off, will any 900(SS,ie etc) cover fit? What other problems are likely to have happened under to cover?

Not any cover will fit.

Not sure if your bike has a single or 3 phase alternator...the covers are different.

If it's a single there are 2 or 3 different covers used over the years. Not sure how many 3 phase covers there were.

Thanks. Here is a pic of it:

Not sure if that helps to ID it. I have seen some covers on eBay which look extremely similar, most are much different. But I don't suppose external apearance can show what is inside.

A little JB Weld will fix that right up!

So, I am finding two distinct types of covers.

This one appears to be the same type. Any clue if this is a single phase or triple?

And this type which is obviously different, and won't fit.

take it off, the part number is on the inside.

Not my bike, yet. Just attempting to access how much the repairs will be, and how available the parts are.

The bike in the photo appears to have a 3 phase alternator.

The cover that appears the same is from a later bike with a timing sensor.

It should work if you block off the sensor hole. You might be able to leave the sensor right where it is and trim the wire back a little more.

The one that is different is for a single phase alternator.

Thanks. Good to know.

If you buy it make sure the sensor doesn't hit any of the gears inside the cover. It shouldn't, but be sure to check.
