Title: question about cylinder base gasket ?
Post by: desmodoktor on April 06, 2013, 03:37:26 PM
hello, i was just wondering if there's a difference between these two cylinder base gaskets?
part # 786.1.069.2A   VS   part # 786.1.095.1A ...
what happened was : i wanted to replace the gasket on my 2002 m750D again because when i was pulling out the valves (previously i made a mistake and i put threebond gasket sealant on between the valve housing and the cylinder.. ) so that sealed them together and when i pulled it off the whole cylinder came off .. anyways, i looked at ducatiomaha books for the part number for this gasket and i got part# 78610692A. so i ordered it .. received it and installed it ... now its leaking from the hole that sends oil to the valves on the right side (view from the back).. it was also leaking when the bike was not running (valves had some oil inside) ... now i called my friend who works for a ducati dealership told him to order a new gasket for me and the part number he gave me is  part # 786.1.095.1A ...  went to http://www.ducatimcparts.com (http://www.ducatimcparts.com) and they have the same part number for that gasket.. looks like ducati omaha has the wrong number on their blue prints for my 02m750. my question to you is ... are these two gaskets different from one another? the thickness is the same .4 , and shape as well... im wondering if i installed the wrong one since that gasket is for 03 m620... please let me know ..  thank you .  [Dolph]

when they deleted the o-ring from the oil supply hole in 01 they had issues that they tried all sorts of things to fix, settling on a steel tube poking out of the cases from memory.  so it depends what yours is like, but i would expect either to work.

you could even get an earlier one 78610491a with the big hole at the oil feed and put a very thin o-ring in there.

or i have machined an o-ring space in quite a few cylinders over the years, but both these are getting a bit more advanced and without familiararity with engines across various years that might be a bit hard to understand, etc.

also with 2002 the locating dowel for the cylinders moved from lh centre to 45 degrees off front to the lh side, so you need to account for that with an exta hole.

are you using a generous amount of threebond 1215, the grey ducati stuff or equivalent?

when i did it the first time , 3 years ago i used a lot of threebond 1194 with the new gasket i put in. it was fine till last summer . one hot day i was really pushing the bike on the canyons and when i got home there was a small leak from there... rode it normally for another 500 miles and surprisingly there was no leak .
this time when i put the gasket i only put a touch of threebond 1194 around the engine case , put the gasket there and closed it ... now it leaks from the top of the gasket . like i said it was even leaking when the engine was not running . very good point u made with the thinner gasket and a small oring. do u think it will make a difference the gasket being .1 thinner around the rest of the cylinder?

I just replaced the gasket on my '99 M900, and the workshop manual specified Loktite 510 to dress the metal gasket. I found that Permatex Anaerobic Gasket Maker was a good equivalent, so I went with that since it was much cheaper and readily available.

When I applied it, I used it sparingly. Only a small amount squished from the metal gasket when I torqued the head nuts down, but I can see it. There was not a lot on from the factory when I removed the old gasket.

It sounds like the dealership would use Ducbond if they had to do the same procedure, but I'm not sure exactly what type of liquid gasket it is, though it is expensive!

don't use a hardening sealant like the 510 or equivalent.  use an appropriate silicon, probably doesn't matter which one as there are many available.  i use the 1215 because it's easy to get in a big tube and that's what ducati recommend.

gasket thickness from 0.3 to 0.4mm is irrelevant.  you just need to make sure you have some way of sealing the oil delivery tube.  i use the o-ring as it works, but you have to set it up right.
