Title: DP ABS ECU for non-ABS monster
Post by: kokis on April 16, 2013, 08:42:29 PM
Hello,
I have set of termignoni slipons with ABS ecu but I have non abs monster 696. [bang] [bang] [bang]
Will I experience problems with that?
If yes I will have to use stock ECU and airfilter with slipons. Will I experience issues with that setup also?

You cannot use the ABS ecu on your non-ABS M696.

Of your options better to use your stock ECU with the Termi slipons.  No real issues there other than the lost benefit of not having the DP mapping.

Other option:  Sell the DP ABS ecu (DP ECU's are somewhat sought after) and buy yourself a second stock M696 ecu of the same series part number as your original (stock ECUs are less sought after and come up around here and on ebay reasonably inexpensively) and have that spare stock ECU reflashed to whatever spec you'd like.

Will not it work at all? (DP ABS ECU)

Second one is good idea. Thank you.

Will it not work at all?   Define "at all".

At the very least the ECU will crack the shits when it doesnt hear anything from the bike's (missing) ABS system....  throw up an ABS failure code which will lead to... I dont know what.

I wouldnt even try it if it was mine.

I hope may be it have "ABS Turn off" function in menu, and it will work normal. Was waiting 4 month for this set to be installed and fail now( :-[

No idea if that would solve the problems of the missing parts..., but even if it did..., every time you turn the key on, you'd have to go through the menu to disable the ABS.

What did you end up doing?  I have the same situation, got an ABS ECU but my bike in a non-ABS version.  Did you install slips on with filter?

Would be nice if  you went to the Introduce Yourself thread and talked a little about yourself . . .

ignore them, those comments were rude and seemingly without cause.

strictly using the slip on would not necessitate a new tune, so you could leave out the air filter and run it.

if you wanted to get all the benefits of the kit you could have your stock ECU flashed with an appropriate map.

there is no way to get the ABS ECU to work in a non-abs bike. ECU flash is the only way and that could be one to ANY ecu. closer to correct the better but I believe (o research) as long as they are the same generation its all good.

as i understand it:

originally they used two different ecu.  non abs has a # on the back of it 28641702A, conti # S180040101.  the abs one has 28641852A, conti # 5WY8691-AAA.

then they started using the same ecu for both abs and non abs.  hm1100 uses the "abs" ecu, etc, and the m659 we get here also uses the same for both.

so it depends what ecu yours has originally to know if you can flash a suitable non abs map in it.  if you need the early 1702A ecu, just buy one off ebay and flash it.

Thanks for the comments.  I am still undecided as my researches yield these options like you guys mentioned:

1. Buy another identical stock ECU and reflash the ECU to match current bike setup (not sure about the cost)

2. Re-flash ABS DP ECU to match current bike setup ($250-$350) using MotoWheels or Redline? I am worried if the mapping is not appropriate for my specific bike, I will need to send the ECU back for remapping.

3. Install power commander or other tuning accessories to match bike setup (>$350) at any shop that can offer Duc 696 tuning.  There is a local shop that can do this for me including dyno, but it is the least cost effective.

What would you rather do if you are in this position? I really like my termi slips-on and I think there is unreached performance potential due to incorrect ECU/mapping. My primary goal is to improve rideability (better accel, reduce sputtering/popping during decel).  It should be able to be achieved thru better fuel mapping.  Also, I will probably get some increase in power.
