Title: Ok so i just had the oil filter changed on my 2012 659
Post by: wbj007 on April 19, 2013, 02:53:07 AM
After the 1000k service on my 659 i started to get leaks from the oil filter on start up and the filter constantly had oil around it. The first time i took it into the shop they tightened it and said to keep an eye on it and a couple a days ago it was pouring out instead of its usual trickle so they replaced the filter. Apparently this has been an issue with a few monsters but the guy i was dealing with didn't care to elaborate. I am interested to know if anyone else on here knows anything about this or has had the same issue?

The filters need to be fairly tight to not leak.  I had one filter that I never got to stop dripping until I changed it.  If the new filter isn't leaking I wouldn't worry about it.

I think that for some reason they changed to a harder O-ring seal material so the newer filters need to be tighter.  I don't think K&N, HiFlo or other aftermarket filters have the leak issue.

maybe it leaked because they didn't prime the gasket before installing?  The factory torque spec for the filter is only like 5ft/lbs if I recall which is like hand tight.

I had this issue last year.

I attempted to retighten the oil filter (1/4T past hand tight) after finding this issue just after my 600 mile service. The filter became loose again and was losing even more oil the second time around 1000 miles.

I got tired of cleaning oil off the bottom of my engine case and worrying about losing oil everytime I rode - I was commuting to/from work ~ 120 miles.

I fixed the problem by installing a hose clamp on the filter, wedging the worm gear next to the case so it couldn't back off, and lockwiring the clamp to the case.

This solution worked since it was implemented last year - about 9000 miles ago.

Note: I tried getting a "pretty" (red anodized) filter clamp from one of the aftermarket places, but it doesn't grip the filter like a worm drive hose clamp does - it crushes the filter.

My filter was leaking quite badly last year, and tightening didn't help.  Finally I swapped it for a K&N and the leaking stopped.  I then had the dealer change the oil in the fall, and thus far the second new filter isn't leaking.  I don't know what the issue was with the leaking filter, but I'm glad it seems resolved.

Appreciate the feedback. It hasn't leaked since i had the change so hopefully that fixed the problem. I'm still new to riding so i was a little confused as to why this was happening or if it was just a Motorcycle thing.

Hell is only 500 km away? :)

My 695 leaks oil onto the horizontal cylinder header pipe after I did an oil change. I bought a filter wrench and used a torque wrench to set it to the specified torque, but it still leaks. I bought the Ducati OEM filter from my local dealer, perhaps it's one that has the O-rings with the harder rubber compound. Next time I'll get a K&N.
