Hello everyone. I've run into a problem and I hope someone might be able to help me out. I recently purchased a pretty worn 2002 monster 750s ie. It ran but was beat up. I changed brakes, tires and rode it for a while. I then noticed a click in the throttle. When this click happened, the bike would either feel like it lost power or like it got it back. So I tried to find a fix. I read a lot about the fuel filter, so I opened the tank and cleaned it out the best I could (It was pretty terrible). I replaced the fuel filter with one from nappa.
After reassembling everything, the bike now wont stay on. After messing with the spark plugs, I took apart the tank again and made sure fuel was pumped into the filter, out of the filter, and out of the tank (it only pumped out of one hole, which I thought was strange) I reassembled once more, and this time the bike stayed on longer (about 10 sec) but it still wont stay on, and if I touch the throttle at all, the bike dies.
Also, after I start it then it dies, I check the plugs. The lower one usually has black residue (often wet) and the upper had some dry residue, but the upper one is usually not that bad. After I clean them, it will start for a few seconds again and die. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
What did you use to clean out the tank?
I'd try a new set of plugs.
how did the hoses inside the tank looked? also +2 on new plugs
do you have a diagnostic tool? can get a friend who has one? why, check TPS angle and mV settings . . .
I have already changed the plugs a second time. The hoses in the tank were fine, and I dont have access to a diagnostic tool. Maybe the injectors are dirty? I turned the bike with the air box open and felt puffs of air coming up. I also changed the battery.
update: It will sometimes start better now if I mess with the throttle. Still stays on for a maximum of maybe 10 secs, idle drops and dies.
Did you install the filter with the arrow pointing in the direction of flow?
You said you cleaned out the tank. How?
Did you check the screen on the pump for blockage?
The nappa filter has an "in" side marked. The line coming from the pump in going in that side. I just emptied the tank, scrubbed what I could (there was a rag in there!), took out all the parts an cleaned them (filter, pump). I got the bike to stay on for about 5 minutes now, but it runs terribly. And if I use the throttle, it bogs down. After a few runs, I took the plugs out and they were both very black and dry.
Now its back to not starting at all again. Please Help.
This post (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=12274.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=12274.0)) says that when you turn the key you hear the pump, and once its pressurized I shouldn't hear it anymore, but I hear it every time I turn the key and when I'm pushing the ignition button. Clue?

If the pump doesn't reach pressure and turn off there is either a leak inside the tank, bad hose or connection, or the pressure regulator is faulty. I suppose a faulty pump is possible, but not likely.
The regulator is on the throttle bodies and connects to the fuel return back to the tank. You could try clamping off the return to see if the pump stops running
Alright, I got her running again, but still very rough. As I drive, there are these click, which cause the bike bog. I can feel the click in the throttle and its like i hit the brake. Then power will come back. It can do this many times, sometime very violently. I wonder if it is timing. I still need to replace the belts and have the valves adjusted. Would these cause this issue? Thank you for all the help up to now.
It sounds like it's backfiring through the intake.
That could be a very tight valve, or it could be a lean condition.
Does your pump shut off?
If it doesn't your issue could be low fuel pressure causing it to run lean, or not creating a good spray pattern through the injectors.
Check for the vacuum hose connecting to the fuel pressure regulator, it could be that when you create a "0" pressure environment, the regulator 'stops' working and then 'catches' up [am I making sense?], but, if these 'clicks' are present when idling, it could be a bad injector, is the only thing that I can think of that makes 'clickclickclickclickclickclick'[opening and closing of injector, noise]
Remember, these ideas were born in Spanish and translated to English as I write . . .
Now, if this all continues, you will have to have looked at by someone who can diagnose it with a diagnostic tool.
I don't think the Monster uses a vacuum line to the pressure regulator.
It just vents to atmosphere.
The system is pretty basic.

not to threadjack, it's raining real hard, so, when it stops, I'll go look . . . just to be sure, automobile mechanics kicking it dp . .
Don't look. Vented to atmosphere.

too late . . . went out this morning . . . vents to atmosphere . . .
as said before, auto mechanics kicked in . . :P
Sorry for the late reply guys. Just had a baby yesterday. ;D When I turn the key the pump comes on for a few seconds, the stops. Once the bike turns over, the pump runs continuously. Its still very rough, dies frequently, and at first start using the throttle kills it. (thats with the throttle advance, if thats what is called, all the way up). I also hear a knocking. It sounds like its coming from the lower cylinder area. Would seafoaming it be a bad idea?

Does it hurt as much as they say? ;D

Considering my complete lack of the necessary parts, the doctors called it a miracle ;D Thanks.
Regarding the bike, ducpainter mentioned backfiring through the intake. I took of the air filter and did see combustion coming up.

I'd do a compression or leak down test.
