A few months ago I set out to rid the 796 of its boat anchor exhaust. The low and wide slung cans have always reminded me of pontoons - just sloppy and overall looked like sh*t. The midpipe especially looks like it was constructed by a drunk Italian after missing his siesta. Anyways, after working with my favorite exhaust fabricator (RPM Performance in Oceanside, CA) we came up with this design after many measurements and sketches. The Goal: Design a shorty GP inspired exhaust with maximum flow characteristics, equal length primaries or close to it, lowest possible mass, low CG, and have it sound aggressive but not unbearable - I'm talking to you Boomtubes/H-Comp ;D ;D The Result: Total exhaust weighs 8.9lbs with DB killer installed. A total loss of 16lbs was achieved. The primaries are 48mm vs 45mm stock, all mandrel bent and TIG welded. Primaries are very close to equal length - much closer than the factory attempt, M4 carbon street slayer can used. The design hugs the engine case as close as possible to minimize the visual mass of the exhaust - it's amazing how Richard was able to bend and weld this thing with such precision. No rubbing or fitment issues at all! Power? Since I did not do an official baseline dyno final numbers will be unknown. My butt dyno tells me good things are happening though! Much better mid and upper range pull for sure. I'm currently running a map for a full Termi race exhaust and its fueling matches surprisingly well. I'm content for now but will eventually get a PCV in there and get some dyno time to perfect the tune. Handling is equally improved, with 16lbs gone and a lower CG the bike feels great in transitions and turn in - a small but noticeable difference. The sound? Amazing [thumbsup] The M4 can does an amazing job of sound suppression for its diminutive size. The can is the same one Shift Tech rebrands for its Monster and Diavel systems. I was expecting it to be louder actually. I would rank it louder than Termis but not nearly as loud boomtubes or H-comp. A bit more muted than say an 1100evo with the CW can. I'll have a video clip as soon as the bike is put back together - I'm working on a full carbon fiber undertail and license plate relocation [beer] And so it's on to the next project... The piping looks phenomenal! If i was to go with something like that id have to choose a not as big around muffler.... The cowl would give it an interesting look, but what comes to mind when looking at your bikes setup is that your going for a minimal look. So IMO the cowl doesnt match your bike. I think it looks SICK without it!
So are you guys looking at maybe offering the setup for a price? Id be interested... Title: Re: Custom 796 GP-style exhaust project...the "short and sweet" <pics> Post by: joshuajcrouch on April 27, 2013, 09:15:25 AM Looks sick!
Maybe its just the angles of the pictures, but the headers look unequal in length. Any chance you can get a video so we can hear it? Title: Re: Custom 796 GP-style exhaust project...the "short and sweet" <pics> Post by: memper on April 27, 2013, 11:18:25 AM I think it looks tits. So much better than stock.
Couple questions: - what's the pipe diameter? From what I have researched, doing a 2-1 will restrict performance unless a large diameter pipe is used. - how do the 796's fare without an oil cooler? Many bikes have them, many bikes don't. I would like to remove mine. Your correct, the theme I'm going for is one of naked minimalism; Radical Ducati-esque you could say. The multistrada belly would kinda go against that ethos but I think it still looks great - we'll see how it blends when it's all mounted up. This was a one-off custom, nothing will be offered for sale. Looks sick! Maybe its just the angles of the pictures, but the headers look unequal in length. Any chance you can get a video so we can hear it? Your right, the primaries are NOT equal length but then again neither is the OEM exhaust (as everyone seems to think!). Equal length is not all that important in these twins, or at least Ducati's engineers didn't think so. The OEM headers are mismatched by ~6". Mine varies by ~3" (the horiz being longer than the vert). IMO the equal length thing is overrated; we got them as close as possible but it wasn't mission critical to have them "equal". The newer 1100evo exhaust design is even more mismatched and yet it still makes more power than the older 1100. I think it looks tits. So much better than stock. Couple questions: - what's the pipe diameter? From what I have researched, doing a 2-1 will restrict performance unless a large diameter pipe is used. - how do the 796's fare without an oil cooler? It's shaping up to be one of my favorite new Monsters. Very creative work with the exhaust. Imo it would look even sicker ceramic coated black! What's that panel in the last pic?

I just posted a topic looking for any short non boom tube exhausts.. I see that this is custom, any idea of a comparable retail version?? Good stuff! [bacon] I began fabricating the mounts for it this last weekend. I picked up the same panels in carbon fiber instead of the OEM aluminum ones in the pic [evil] Title: Re: Custom 796 GP-style exhaust project...the "short and sweet" <pics> Post by: Anthony712 on June 29, 2014, 04:46:02 PM Love the Exhaust [thumbsup]! Been looking into putting a GP-style on my bike but haven't had any luck finding any for sale. By any chance your exhaust guy will be willing to make another setup?

Title: Re: Custom 796 GP-style exhaust project...the "short and sweet" <pics> Post by: EEL on March 19, 2015, 09:09:33 AM Kudos for thinking it thru. Very closely matched exhaust runs and anything that makes servicing easier is a plus. Your routing makes it so you wont ever need to take off your exhaust headers when you do belts and valves.
Did you get a double flanged connection where the muffler connects to the header? Only 2 comments to nitpick. 1) I don't see 18mm lambda / o2 sensor ports on the headers. I would suggest you put one independant bung on each header run for future tuning. 2) I always like a slip fit w/ spring on each header to allow for the system to expand a bit due to heat. This is JUST ME but I always have a worry in the back of my mind that hard locking in long runs of header without expansion adds stress at the header connection points. I see you have one on the vertical but I dont see one on the horizontal. Excellent Job [thumbsup] Title: Re: Custom 796 GP-style exhaust project...the "short and sweet" <pics> Post by: danaid on March 19, 2015, 12:04:15 PM I think I've seen his bike for sale on Craigslist, might be wrong?
