Title: Post 15K Service Blues
Post by: Mike_D on April 28, 2013, 01:14:16 PM
I picked up my 08 S2R1K bike yesterday after its 15K service and took it out today for a short run to Richmond and back.  When I stopped for breakfast, oil was dripping down the left side and back of the front cylinder and pooling on the ground.  Upon further inspection, oil had blown back all over the exhaust, rear shock and tire.  Looking at the oil sight window, it appeared to have been way overfilled.

On the ride up, my oil temp held steady at about 204, and the oil pressure warning light never came on.  I nursed it back home, stopping every 10 miles to check on it...oil still dripped down the cylinder and crankcase, but no warning light and oil temp below 200.  When I got home, the oil level was still above the max fill line.

Needless to say, I'm pretty pissed, especially when I told them that I had just changed the oil at 14k miles and to skip that...looking at the invoice, they did it anyway.  Does this sound like an overfill issue and how much hell should I raise with them when I take it back to the shop?  Thanks.

It takes a few minutes for the oil to settle after running the bike for a while, so after running it the level can be a bit deceiving. For an oil change I actually fill mine a bit more than half run it and then let it sit for a few minutes to see what the oil level is at. Your bike sounds like it has something is wrong (obviously). Could you see where the oil was leaking from? You stated left side and back of front cylinder thankfully there is only a hand full of places it could come from. Intuition tells me it might be the oil filter leaking if its the back of the horizontal cylinder. Quite possible if they didn't tighten down the filter good enough. If the bike was overfilled it would be syphoning through your crankcase breather and into your intake or possibly getting past the cylinders either way results in smoke.

Check these places and see if you can tell where the oil is coming from.

-Oil filter
-Valve covers
-Cam cover bolts (there is an oil gallow that feeds heads if the bolts are not tightened and sealed it will leak from there)
-Edges of case covers
-Cylinder head between the crankcase and cylinder head
-Oil cooler lines and connections

You must call the shop that performed the work and have them pick up the bike and fix what they missed, there might be a loose cover, other than just overfilled oil.

Don't raise hell, but do get it back to their shop in the condition it is in now.  If it is leaking as badly as you described have them pick it up.
