Title: I just got my First Ticket
Post by: ROBsS4R on July 03, 2008, 12:21:51 PM
Well its really a fix it ticket.

I was giving a verbal warning for my Turn signals and exhaust. He thought they were to loud. I have FBF and they are not loud at all compared to other exhaust systems. The Turn signals are Rizoma Zero Ones.

The License plate is a Cookie I think.

In any case what the heck do I do. the tail has been cut already. I have been riding like this for 2 years now passing a few cops everyday. I wonder why I stood out to him today    :-\

Cops will cite you for that if they want to be a jerk or push up their stats. If it's a fix-it ticket, you can either challenge it on procedural grounds or just temporarily put the bike back to semi-stock form.

If you want to go the fix-it route, put the stock exhaust back on and put your duck bill back on(I have the frame piece I cut off of mine, and it might fit).

Wait a sec...did you actually get cited or not? It sounds like he just let you off with a warning.

If he didn't cite you, don't worry about it.

how far are those signals apart?

How many dB is your exhaust at 50 ft?

What's wrong with the license plate?

A Verbal for the singals and exhaust and a yellow fix it ticket for the license plate.

Its clearly can be seen as I shown in the picture above. no obstructed in anyway. He said he wants to put back on the original pieces including the reflectors... Ugg.

So I guess I need to fix it and drive down to the station and have them sign the fix it ticket?

Didn't someone else on this forum get the lame license plate ticket recently =)

Well I am not going to worry about the exhaust. He gave me a warning meaning he though it was okay enough not to give me a ticket. The license plate is prob not even bent at a 45 degree angle =( It can clearly be seen from a vehicle.

Okay here is what the ticket says. Man police officers have the worse writing.

License plate must be clearly visible with white light and reflectors.

Verbals turn signal exhaust.

That's usually the procedure.

Didn't someone else on this forum get the lame license plate ticket recently =)

I got hassled for it, but no ticket. The CHP was cracking down because they claimed we often run from them.

It should not be too hard to deal with this ticket. If you still have the duck bill and the part of the frame you cut, it's easy. If not, I have the frame part that may fit.

I gave my parts to Someguy.  :-\

Oh well such is life.

Must have been a slow day for that cop. 20,000 miles in 2 years and not once hassled for anything.

Looks like I have 2 months to fix it so I have plenty of time to figure it out.

Just zip tie something on there and take 'er down to the station.  That's how I have mine.  It flaps in the wind like a clean sheet too.   [cheeky]

For writing such a lame ticket he was rather pleasant to speak to.

He asked me if I bought the bike that way and I said no. It was already modded when I bought it which is true. I did not add the tail chop or the exhaust to it or anything.

I told him I bought it with 1800 miles on it. He said did you get a good deal and I said yes at the time it was $9500. He said did the first guy get scared when he bought it and sold it. I said well he had a small child and he wanted to spend more time with them and get into a safer vehicle. He said that shouldn't make you stop riding and do what you love basically.

A little know fact about fix-it tickets.
My old ford escort had those automatic seat belts. The drivers side did not work, it was stuck in the aft position i.e. safe to drive position.
I was working at the Oakland airport at the time so i was parked right across from the sheriff station. A cop noticed one day that the passenger
seat belt went forward but mine did not. He gave me a fix-it ticket. I explained that that would be impossible without getting a new door. He said just
go to the court house pay the fine and a few for not fixing the problem and go on your merry way.
The moral of the story is you can get rid of the ticket without actually fixing the licence plate frame, you just run the risk of getting another ticket.

A few years ago I got a fix-it-ticket in the mail fro not having a front license plate (cage).  This was shortly after I moved, so it took awhile for the letter to get to me (change of address).  My month to fix the missing front plate had expired and the $35 parking ticket and $10 fix it ticket was up to around $300 or so.  Really pissed me off [bang]

Here's my .02

Bend your plate vertical when you go to the police station.  After you turn the corner and head down a few blocks, bend it back.  use zip ties to hold on some reflectors.  As far as the white light to illuminate the plate, this is what I did:  I took off my taillight cover and drilled a rectangular hole in the bottom.  I then glued a clear piece of plastic to cover the hole; to prevent water/containments getting into the taillight, while allowing clear light to shine on the plate.

For the plate a lot of people on BARF have been using this:

http://www.customdynamics.com/illuminatorz_licence_plates.htm

it's supposedly ridiculously bright if you have all 6 leds going.

If you keep it that way, your plate would probably end up hitting the rear tire at some point.

Anyone have a extra rear reflector thats going into the city tonight ?

ANY reflector would work, it doesn't have to be a stock one.  Pull one off a bicycle or something, preferably a arrogant, no regard for others, stinky bike-messenger's bike  ;D.

Side note, this violation was during the day time?

California Vehicle Code clearly states that
Quote
Reflectors on Rear

24607.  Every vehicle subject to registration under this code shall at all times be equipped with red reflectors mounted on the rear as follows:

(a) Every vehicle shall be equipped with at least one reflector so maintained as to be plainly visible at night from all distances within 350 to 100 feet from the vehicle when directly in front of the lawful upper headlamp beams.

(b) Every vehicle, other than a motorcycle or a low-speed vehicle , manufactured and first registered on or after January 1, 1965, shall be equipped with at least two reflectors meeting the visibility requirements of subdivision (a), except that trailers and semitrailers manufactured after July 23, 1973, that are less than 30 inches wide, may be equipped with one reflector which shall be mounted at or near the vertical centerline of the trailer. If the vehicle is equipped with two reflectors, they shall be mounted as specified in subdivision (d).

(c) Every motortruck having an unladen weight of more than 5,000 pounds, every trailer coach, every camp trailer, every vehicle, or vehicle at the end of a combination of vehicles, subject to subdivision (a) of Section 22406, and every vehicle 80 or more inches in width manufactured on or after January 1, 1969, shall be equipped with at least two reflectors maintained so as to be plainly visible at night from all distances within 600 feet to 100 feet from the vehicle when directly in front of lawful upper headlamp beams.

(d) When more than one reflector is required, at least one shall be mounted at the left side and one at the right side, respectively, at the same level. Required reflectors shall be mounted not lower than 15 inches nor higher than 60 inches, except that a tow truck, in addition to being equipped with the required reflectors, may also be equipped with two reflectors which may be mounted not lower than 15 inches nor higher than the maximum allowable vehicle height and as far forward as the rearmost portion of the driver's seat in the rearmost position. Additional reflectors of a type meeting requirements established by the department may be mounted at any height.

(e) Reflectors on truck tractors may be mounted on the rear of the cab. Any reflector installed on a vehicle as part of its original equipment prior to January 1, 1941, need not meet the requirements of the department provided it meets the visibility requirements of subdivision (a).

(f) Area reflectorizing material may be used in lieu of the reflectors required or permitted in subdivisions (a), (b), (c), (d), and (e), provided each installation is of sufficient size to meet the photometric requirement for those reflectors.
Amended Ch. 216, Stats. 1990. Effective January 1, 1991.
Amended Sec. 36, Ch. 766, Stats. 1995. Effective January 1, 1996.
Amended Sec. 7, Ch. 140, Stats. 1999. Effective January 1, 2000.

Oh yeah and make sure the one you buy is red, I hear a lot of people using the sticker adhesive ones you can buy at a truck stop. Make a little bracket out of plastic that goes under the license plate put the reflector sticker on it... Get ticket signed off, then remove piece, use it when you have your next violation.

I had a fix-it for my license plate (car) a couple years ago when I didn't mount any plate at all. Just like any other ticket, the longer you wait, the higher the cost goes up. If you pay immediately after the initial fix-it time runs out, it shouldn't be too terrible. $30 - $60 maybe and you don't have to show anyone you fixed anything. That's what I did.

I think I may have one buried somewhere. And other Monster parts too.

EDIT:

In fact, I may have enough parts to assemble a stock-looking plate mount too., including the rear fender.

Thanks for all the offers.

Tonight I cut a square out of the underneath of the Brake lens and put a clear piece of plastic. I also bent the license plate forward a bit even though it was clearly visible before  :-\

The last thing I will do this weekend is put a red reflector right below the license plate bracket. That surely should pass my fix it ticket  :-\

What do you think guys  ???

So here are the pictures.

I bent the plate down even more even though it was clearly visible and put 4 reflectors on it.
After looking at it even though I can tell the first number is a 1 and the second number is a 7 but I am sure some cop was going to complain about not being able to read it.

So I removed 2 of the bottom reflectors.

Last but not least I cut a window out of the plastic lens and put a clear peice of plastic to cover it with.

Hey dude!  I had exactly the same problem that you do (well, almost).  I got pulled over twice because of the chopped tail.  The cops told me that they couldn't see my license plate.  They also told me that I was probably one of those kids who race on the streets and don't want the cops to see the license plate numbers???  Anyway, to fix my ticket I had to change the angle of my license plate.  Make it more visible for the cops!  ???

hope that helps
