1100 Monster EVO
Anyone aware of any issues re excessive cam end play?
Took the bike in for the 7500 mile check, and while checking belt tension, the tech noticed what seemed to be an excessive amount of cam end play in the vertical cylinder. Eyeballing it, I guessed about .100 in/ 2.5 Mm. Since the shop manual does not have a factory spec for it, he called the Ducati technical representative. They finally decided to order replacement roller flanges. Since nothing else could be determined as a possible cause. They are thinking that the roller flange bevel is not correct, and therefore not matching the cam bevel.
The end pay for that cam is definitely more than the other cylinder, and more than another bike that we examined. The thread protrusion through the nut appeared to be less also.
The kicker is that the cam can shift enough to contact the side of a rocker arm.
We are hoping the new flange comes in on Friday, so I might have a resolution next week.

I have the 1100 cams on my 696 and have no issues with too much play.

The cam endplay is controlled by the cam, cylinder head, and cam endcap (left side cam cover).
Sounds like something mis-machined with one of those.
Thanks for the reply. I see what you are saying, and I do have aftermarket end caps.
They considered the end cap, but called the Duc tech number anyway. They might not have mentioned the aftermarket caps to him, when he theorized that the roller flange bevel was not sufficient for proper clamp up onto the cam. The difference in thread protrusion also goes along with his theory.
As I understand it, the end cap determines movement in the direction toward the cap, but tend to agree with them that the flange position as it mates to the cam sets the travel in the other direction. The fact that the manual does not have a tolerance isn't helpful either. We checked another bike, and it, along with the other cylinder on my bike, all had more play than you would expect, but none was as much as the worst one on my bike.
I haven't heard from them which means the new parts have not come in yet. In the interim, I'm going to take the OE cap to them and see if there is any difference when installed.

aftermarket end caps
the 1100 and 696 end caps are different sizes in depth.
when i tried to put an 1100 end cap on the 696 there was all kinds of slop.

I know I wouldn't be having so much angst if it were me doing the work. Guess I am experiencing the unintended consequences of trying to be a good boy and keeping the warranty trouble free.
Thing of it is, if I had the bike at home I would be throwing the end caps on a surface plate and taking msmsnts. If there were a significant difference between OE and the pretty one, I would throw it on my mill. It is only a HF mill, but perfect for small stuff such as this.
I'm not going to bug them today, but will give them a call tomorrow. In the meantime, I've been dusting off the SV.
Update.
The new roller flange has not come in yet. While in my funk, I remembered what Speeddog had posted, so I took the OE end caps in and measured them as compared to the after market ones (CNC Racing). Yep, there was a difference. With the OE caps in place, cam movement was just a few thousandths.
Two lessons learned:
1.Just because it was made in Italy and is supposed to fit your Duc, doesn't mean it will. :-[
2. Listen to what Speeddog says. If you have a better idea than he does, it probably aint. [thumbsup]
There was one mechanic in the shop who initially suggested the fault was with the after market caps, but he was voted down by three other mechs. He had the "I told you so" grin on his face today.
So, for what it is worth, the CNC Racing cam end caps will not fit correctly on a 2012 1100 EVO. Since they are so pretty, and I am vain and petty, I will be turning a spacer ring, appropriately sized, to make up for the missing millimeters.

Oh, and great info for the rest of the thread and glad you dodged that bullet. I make aftermarket parts and the curve-balls Ducati throws me are pretty damn scary. :P
Oh, and those cam caps rock. Speedymoto should make them. They have attention to detail. And I promised myself I'll never ever make pretty anodized CNC things for Ducatis. Ever.
Just a note: As I have discovered with my 2013 Evo there are a few items that the manufactures think fit but don't. Apparently there are some small differences between 2012's and 2013's. Were I a machinist I could fix the Bitubo steering damper I just bought [bang] It fits a 2012 but the ignition mounting post is too short. I hate sending stuff back......
As pretty as those end caps are I am gonna stay with stock.
