Title: Sprag Bearing.
Post by: koko64 on May 03, 2013, 10:09:30 PM
Changed out the sprague bearing in the starter gear on a 1992 900 Superlight.
Another custlmer has a 2001 Bonneville America with same issue. No worries, look at the manual, I think its the same bearing.
Ducati part no is 70140011A.
Can anyone confirm? Also who's a good parts supplier for these limey bikes Stateside or in Britain?
If its the same part (sure looks it), the Triumph packaging costs $200 more down here.

Cheers.

I believe it's cheapest as a ktm part.

Thanks for the lead.
Ill check 'em out.
I remember when old Harley main bearings were the same as Holden HQ wheel bearings. Boy did the Harley packaging cost a bomb.

Yep, premium H-D cardboard for sure.
IIRC the bearing store version was $20 max back then.

Pity the sprague's a bit special.

The Triumph sprague is the same except the rear retainer plate has a 1-2mm lip. The kit comes with a starter clutch housing plate that bolts over it. Big bucks.

It pays to shop around.
A while back I had the sprag in my darmah adapted to take a 916 sprag.
I bought the sprag locally cost just over $ 200.
Once I had the part number I found I could have sourced it for about $100 from the states although postage has increased substantially since then

Thanks Brad.
I'll check it out and see what they want for it.
The bearing rollers and diameter are the same. Also has the little scribed arrow on the back of the bearing.

Does the later type come as a kit with a stepped retaining plate that bolts over the bearing and trap the lip?  The retaining plate traps the lip at the back of the bearing and has a circlip to retain it at the front.

The kit with extra part may explain the price difference, although I was only quoted for the bearing.

Is the sprague fried, or just the spring?  The spring can be replaced using a spring from a common lip seal.  I've had one in my '95 SuperSport for the last five years.

Spragues buggered and ruined the starter gear and retaining plate inner and outer diameter bearing faces .
Even the idler gear lost some teeth. Unfortunately cant contemplate the spring fix.

I'll have to check, but I may have an entire sprag/starter assembly from a single phase ST-2 lying around.  I think the parts will interchange with the 900.  If you can confirm I'll part with 'em cheap....if I still have 'em.....and I think I do.

Thanks Cloner.
The customers bike is a Triumph America (2001). So the gears will be different.
Maybe the sprague itself will fit. Used or new?
I will preferably use a new part from KTM or Ducati.
I note that the wreckers have no used spragues/retainer plate sets, one of the first things to go, they said.

Just been talking to KTM. Waiting to hear from Ducati. Triumph might sell their bikes at great prices here, but they sure make up for it on the spares.
The variation in pricing policies is interesting...

Thanks to all you cousins.

Used the KTM sprag, works fine.

Do beware of used starter gears from
different years of 900's, there is
a difference in depth.
Those fr M900 -97 do not fit
my 907 f e. 750SS up to -96 IIRC fits the 907 so
do check spare parts lists!

there are 3 styles or variation.

single phase alt:

6 spline crank, pre 92ish big motor, pre 98 small motor.  sprag 70140011A, same sprag as ktm.

16 spline crank, 92ish on big motor,   sprag 70140011A, same sprag as ktm, different gear and hub to above.

3 phase alt: 98 on small motor, 98/99 update on big motor.

sprag with lip, which sits in the flywheel and the hub is now a steel ring that bolts into the back of the flywheel, covering the lip.  have to remove ring to remove sprag.  it was 70140071A, is now 70140351A.  ask neil at ducati city if he has one and go and have a look.
