Got new rubber on my ST2, but during reassembly, I didn't get something right with the speedometer drive. The drive teeth were engaged properly and the tab is oriented correctly with the fender stop. I'm guessing I missed something with the connection to the wheel, however, the shop manual is a little vague as to what to look for. There's not much room to see when it's going back together; any hints on what to check/what to look for?
Any suggestions much appreciated.

I'd just take it apart and try again.
I took the front wheel of on Saturday -everything looked good, so I put it back together. I noticed the speedo cable housing wasn't fully seated/butted on the end of the wheel sensor, so I pushed it the rest of the way down (which was not easy). Spun the wheel by hand and registered a bit on the speedo, so I thought I was good.
Went for a ride today and it worked fine until I looked down at some point and noticed I was back to 0 mph. Pulled over for roadside inspection and everything looked ok. Got back on and got up to 10mph before it quit working.
Seems that once I come to a complete stop, it will work again until I whack the throttle at which point it stops working until I come to a complete stop again. If I ride mellow through town, it works fine through stop/go, etc.
So it seems that quick acceleration causes a disconnect somehow.
I'm at a loss as to how to fix this, so if anyone has any ideas....

make sure the speedo cable is not kinked and routed properly. I had an issue like this after trying to re-route my cable. I had too tight of a bend on the cable. It worked fine for a while, but once I got up to speed or rode over a bump to compress the forks the speedo stopped registering. Also make sure the internal part of the cable is seated properly on both ends.

Thanks for the feedback. The cable is still routed the same and I didn't notice any kinks. Must be the fork compression that you mentioned. Based on that, I gather it's not fully seating correctly, but I have no idea how to check that. I can pull the housing/cable off of the sensor without a ton of effort. Is that how it should be? What actually keeps the cable seated and how can I tell if it is fully seated?

Is your speedo drive off the front wheel or rear wheel? Having too "tight" of a bend on the cable will affect the "inner" cable that spins your speedo. The compression of the forks will make it worse.
If the cable housing moves from the drive, the knurled nut is not tight enough.
The drive is on the front. The cable is routed as it should be and I can't see any sharp bends, kinks, or anything else that looks unusual.
I can pull the cable/sheath off the knurled nut at the sensor, meaning I don't have to unscrew the nut to take the cable off. Makes me think the cable is wonky but I'm not sure how best to fix it.

Replace the cable
