Title: Route 33 in West Virginia Post by: 1stduc on May 06, 2013, 07:26:45 AM Hi CAMer's,
I'm thinking about riding to 33 sometime in June has anyone done this, is it worth doing it as a day trip or is it better to stay overnight in Harrisonburg? I'm riding from Arlington to Gainesville then cutting through 211 to route 340 to Harrisonburg. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks, Darin Title: Re: Route 33 in West Virginia Post by: The Mad King Pepe' on May 06, 2013, 07:54:32 AM Hey Darin, welcome to the CAM.
People usually head out and back during the same day. Some slab + backroads until 211 then whatever gets you to 33. Break for lunch and usually come back the same way. No need to stay overnight unless you're riding only backroads and stopping a lot for pics. Ciao, Massimo Title: Re: Route 33 in West Virginia Post by: 1stduc on May 06, 2013, 08:02:13 AM Thanks Massimo, I appreciate it. Guess it all depends on what you want to do..

How's the LEO presence in WVA, any places I need to be aware of? West fo Crystal city - closest big intersection is Glebe and Arl Ridge Title: Re: Route 33 in West Virginia Post by: potomacduc on May 07, 2013, 11:21:00 AM Here you go. http://goo.gl/maps/r0Pql (http://goo.gl/maps/r0Pql) Classic route. Do the 33/250 "U" from Harrisonburg to Staunton counter-clockwise, spend the night in Staunton (plenty of decent places to eat/drink there), wake up early and do the whole loop twice in the opposite direction and head home. [clap] [beer] I'll take you out there some time this year if I decide to keep the bikes. If not, it'll just be fountainhead. Try to get the 24th off and come out to Summit Point with NESBA...FUN ON THE TRACK!Title: Re: Route 33 in West Virginia Post by: Autohag on May 07, 2013, 07:58:15 PM Thanks, I have a similar route mapped. How's the LEO presence in WVA, any places I need to be aware of? I'm out that way almost every weekend between May and October. The only LEOs I see are around Moorefield and Wardensville on Old Rt 55. Never on 33, 28/55 or 220. Sweedin Valley rd (aka South Fork rd), between Brandywine and Moorefield, will buy you back time for both distance and speed if you run short on time. If you get a ticket it'll be in Luray, VA. Thanks for the heads up, ya Luray is infamous for handing out tickets. Title: Re: Route 33 in West Virginia Post by: 1stduc on May 08, 2013, 04:29:07 AM Classic route. [beer] Sounds like a plan, I wanted to do a ride similar to the Dragon this beats the heck out of trailering to TN. Thanks, Darin Title: Re: Route 33 in West Virginia Post by: tocino on May 08, 2013, 06:30:47 AM I'll take you out there some time this year if I decide to keep the bikes. Title: Re: Route 33 in West Virginia Post by: gtibrett on May 08, 2013, 08:09:39 PM Slight variation on Ben's route. http://goo.gl/maps/e3ZeB (http://goo.gl/maps/e3ZeB)
Go north in Brandywine. Inner route is fast, sweepers, deserted, and shady. Middle route is fast, sweepers, some traffic. Outer loop has more twisties and some great scenery in Seneca Rocks. Stay on Old 55 for a great road. If you need to get home faster, take New 55. Plan to leave early and get home late. Title: Re: Route 33 in West Virginia Post by: gtibrett on May 08, 2013, 08:14:35 PM Before Ian gets a chance to chime in. I got two tickets in one day last year on that route. One in Luray and one on Old 55 just across border back into VA. Speeding and improper display of license plate.
Title: Re: Route 33 in West Virginia Post by: 1stduc on May 09, 2013, 02:57:08 AM Thanks for posting, gonna consider an overnight stay to cover as much as possible.
Title: Re: Route 33 in West Virginia Post by: potomacduc on May 10, 2013, 04:56:53 AM I think the take away here is, if you're in VA, especially on 211, watch out for [leo]. The spot where 211 crosses Skyline Drive is a common place for a car to lurk. A friend of mine got nabbed there last year. If you're in WV, you're much less likely to to be ticketed, especially as you get further south and west. I have rarely seen police on 33 or 250 in WV.
Title: Re: Route 33 in West Virginia Post by: Slide Panda on May 10, 2013, 05:51:54 AM And if you're on skyline, obey! Skyline drive is on parks land, so local LEO and rangers can ticket there
Title: Re: Route 33 in West Virginia Post by: zooom on May 10, 2013, 06:01:35 AM so local LEO and rangers can ticket there and DO....frequently! I have NEVER heard of anyone getting a warning there ever! |
