So i just got back from deployment onboard cvn 74 john c stennis and thought i would upgrade from my r6 to a ducati. So i bought an 08 monster 695 yesterday rode it back to base about 100 miles. Coming off base today i got on it grabbed second gear my chain snapped and wrapped up around my front sprocket causing my engine case to crack/break off a buisness card size hole in the side of my engine! Im confident mechanically but i need some suggestions. I dont think it can be welded.... but maybe it can. Let me know what you think! Thanks

Can you post up some pictures?
I will get some pictures up soon bike is at my buddies house right now. But basically the case above the front sprocket got broken off. The hole is about a buisness card big with another small hole below the sprocket. Anyone no of someone with extra case halves or maybe a whole new engine?
Oh man I hope you got a good deal. So sorry to hear about the instantly broken bike. Some lessons are very expensive, always check out a new used bike very thoroughly before riding it home. The chain may have been super dry and kinking or it was super loose.
My Duc tells me when it is time to lube the chain........ Good luck finding a solution, I feel your pain. :)
I took some pictures but not very web savy to put them on here off my phone would be happy to email them though

So I called around to some shops and they all said it be best to buy a new engine that weld up my case so I got one from a salvage company in California it only has 1132 miles on it and is guaranteed to run. Me and my buddy pulled the engine out yesterday this is the first newer bike I have worked on and it actually came apart real easy. I'll keep ya'll posted.

While I am waiting for my new engine is there anything you all would sugjest that I change out while I have her all apart? Would hate to be putting it back together and have to wait a week for some part that I need.
Nice work sourcing a new lo-miles motor and getting the busted one out within 2 days.
Hopefully the new unit comes with a clutch slave and push rod. Looks like that region took a beating.
Obviously front/rear sprockets and a quality chain. You had a 14T on there. From scratch it's better to keep 15T and go +3 in the rear for the same overall gearing. Chain is stressed less going around the larger 15T sprocket.
Might be a good idea to put some fresh cam belts on the new motor. Replacement interval is miles or time.
CA-Cycleworks (sponsor) is a great source for those things.

I haven't changed mine yet, but from what I read, springing for your weight(with gear) is pretty cheap and not too hard to do since it's all apart anyways.
does that front sprocket look funky to anyone? alignment issue?
I pulled the clutch rod out it doesn't seem to be bent up but I'm going to replace it anyways since that whole area got destroyed pretty good.
That sprocket didn't seem right to me either it has a pretty good amount of play in it.
I'll keep you all posted.
Any chain/sprocket suggestions?
Can't go wrong with AFAM steel sprockets and DID chains with riveted master link. Best to replace all at once.
I run the supersprox rear sprocket on my M695 (steel teeth, aluminum inner). Works great, saves a little weight, but costs more.
The gearingcommander site or similar can be helpful to plan your sprocket ratios and chain length for optimal wear and wheelbase (if you're the OCD type). Certain combos wear the same links continuously, others less so.

Yes, lots of wear on the side, not so much wear on working surface of the teeth.
Could be an alignment issue.
I've also seen a lot of side wear even with good alignment when the chain is worn out.
Hey how many kays on yer old motor?
If the heads aren't too shagged, I might be interested in them...
7300 I'm probably going to keep it as a parts motor but I'll let you know if I change my mind.
