Title: No Red Key!! Post by: dragonworld. on May 12, 2013, 04:39:47 PM Ok, I kmow I enquired about this a couple of years ago! But riding without the RED key is like playing with a hand grenade with a loose pin! You just dont know when its going to go off, and in this case I'll have a bike that is locked/shutdown/immobilised/wont go!! >:(
So, has anything changed regarding ECU reflashing regarding the ECU from my model Monster?? (M1000DS 2003) Has someone worked out a way to do it?? And , what is available in the aftermarket area! Any new/improved systems about! I remember there were a couple previously but a couple of them were less than satisfactory from all reports!? (Including the people selling them? :o ) I am finally catching up with finances after the marriage going belly up and I'm going to attempt to bring the Monsters up to scratch a bit! So any info will be helpful! [thumbsup] [Dolph] Cheers [beer] Title: Re: No Red Key!! Post by: Speeddog on May 12, 2013, 05:31:08 PM Is this an existing problem with your bike, or is it premature speculation?
Title: Re: No Red Key!! Post by: dragonworld. on May 12, 2013, 05:52:16 PM premature speculation? Hmmmm!! [clap] Like that!! ;D
When the marriage turned to shit I put all the keys in a "SAFE" place so someone didnt take them!! Aaaand when I was moving house I lost ALL the keys to 2 bikes and the car!! The car was bad enough ($280) to replace! The old M750 was a piece of piss but the DS is another matter! Cant even program a spare without the RED! When I enquired a few years back It was suggested that the best way to go was to replace the ECU with an aftermarket one which would also give me infinite tuneablitiy as compared tyo the stocker and I wouldnt have to worry about the immobiliser system having a fit and locking me out!! [roll] Now I'm a bit more financial I am looking at solving a potential problem BEFORE it happens! If I lose the current black key I'm screwed, the bike stays in the garage holding up a blanket!! :'( Title: Re: No Red Key!! Post by: Speeddog on May 12, 2013, 06:21:29 PM Here in the states, there's an outfit you could send your key and gauges to, and they'd send 'em back with a red key and another black.
Or you could get your ECU reflashed and Immo disabled. I suspect there's folks relatively close to you that can do either service. Title: Re: No Red Key!! Post by: dragonworld. on May 12, 2013, 06:48:58 PM Hmmmm, I was originally told that mine couldnt be done and aftermarket was the only way to go!! ???
Maybe things have changed!!?? Anybody know in Oz?? ;D Title: Re: No Red Key!! Post by: 748s on May 13, 2013, 03:14:51 AM Haven't used this place, read about it in a MC forum.

ah i just read you have 1 black there is locksmiths that can clone your black key so no reprogramming needed Title: Re: No Red Key!! Post by: brad black on May 14, 2013, 03:48:29 AM the locksmith in Oakleigh told me they can clone keys. not had one done yet tho.
reflashing with immo disabled is easy. key is cheaper. Title: Re: No Red Key!! Post by: suzyj on May 14, 2013, 02:52:10 PM Oh you reflash! Cool. So no need to send the ecu all the way to the states.
Any chance of putting a DP 695 map (open loop, slipons, immobiliser disabled) an an S4R ecu I have kicking around... Title: Re: No Red Key!! Post by: brad black on May 14, 2013, 06:08:47 PM 695 is a 5am ecu. if the s4r ecu is a 5am then yes. s4r also came with 59m, in which case no.

The mob in Sydney can supply a "RED" master key as well as doing the standard "Black" (No pun intended! [thumbsup] ) As well as "imobilising" the Imobiliser! Quoted $600 for the keys and the neutralising of the imobiliser!? All they need is the dash! Your opinion?? PM if ethics preclude a public opinion?? [thumbsup] Title: Re: No Red Key!! Post by: Sabre Brian on May 14, 2013, 07:56:21 PM Sorry to hijack, but what exactly does the red key do and why is it such a big deal to lose it?
I still have mine and the dealer told me not to lose it, but I don't really understand what it does or why it is so important not to lose it. Title: Re: No Red Key!! [thumbsup] if you remove the imobiliser then you dont need a red key red key is only needed to code the new black keys with the chip in them to enable to imobiliser to read them removing immobiliser means you can change dash to aftermarket Title: Re: No Red Key!! Post by: dragonworld. on May 14, 2013, 10:13:48 PM And to unlock immobilser if it engages!! Otherwise you have an expensive "Clothes Rack"! :o
Thats probably the main reason for having the RED! As well as you will lose money off a resale or trade in price without it!! [thumbsup] I personally would have reservations about buying a bike without the Red key and a functional Immobiliser! ??? I would want VERY GOOD proof of ownership and a lot of $$$ knocked off the price for fixing the problem! [thumbsup] Title: Re: No Red Key!! Title: Re: No Red Key!! Post by: suzyj on May 14, 2013, 11:59:07 PM 695 is a 5am ecu. if the s4r ecu is a 5am then yes. s4r also came with 59m, in which case no. I'm 99.8% sure it's a 5am. It's off an '06 s4r. I'll check when I get home, and if so bung it in the post for ya. Title: Re: No Red Key!! Post by: Steve.In.Atlanta on May 15, 2013, 05:25:28 AM I just bought an '05 S4R without the red key and only one black key. I found this site, http://www.motorcyclekeys.com/ducatichipkey.html (http://www.motorcyclekeys.com/ducatichipkey.html) and ordered two black keys from him. When they came in, I took them to a locksmith who cut the keys then cloned the T5 chip inside. I left my original black key inside and individually tested to make sure the ECU recognized the key. Both worked fine.
I think I paid $18 per key then $22 per key to cut and clone. Now I have two back up blacks and don't use the original Ducati black key, I keep it in a drawer in case I need to copy more keys. The red key is needed to make new black keys if you lose both of them. It doesn't do anything with maintenance on the bike. Hope this helps. Title: Re: No Red Key!! Post by: brad black on May 16, 2013, 05:45:31 AM the red key is not able to override the immo. you need the code card for that. red key is only for coding new black keys.

Yep still got the code! [thumbsup] Have been advised by a motorcycle dealer that without the Red key any trade or sale price would be very much lower! [roll] Title: Re: No Red Key!! Post by: Rowdy on May 16, 2013, 12:55:22 PM Have been advised by a motorcycle dealer that without the Red key any trade or sale price would be very much lower! [roll] Depends on who you trade or sell it too. I sold my 1098s to a bike shop in Moorooka and thought I had the Red key sitting around somewhere. When it came time to drop the bike in I couldn't find it and they didn't care. I didn't care either cause it was a large dealer that told me they were sending the bike interstate as is was a repaired repairable write-off. Good ol' honest used bike dealers. Title: Re: No Red Key!! Post by: brad black on May 16, 2013, 03:18:42 PM Yep still got the code! [thumbsup] Have been advised by a motorcycle dealer that without the Red key any trade or sale price would be very much lower! [roll] you mean the person who would be giving you money for your bike to buy it off you said that they have found an excuse to give you less for it? would they find an excuse to offer you more? if the immo is still active then yes, it's an issue if you don't have the red key and code card. but most ecu I send out after reflashing are generally immo off too, as given the option most people say yes. then the red key issue is gone. if you don't believe the ecu has had the immo disabled unplug the dash. if it starts, the immo has been disabled in the ecu. |
