Every weekend, my neighbor seems to drag home another motorized project - the v12 BMW, a pair of '60s Fiat 500s, a Crosley, a clapped out Triumph flat tracker... It's always something interesting.

Tonight, it was a Ducati Paso that he picked up for $350. It's hard to say much about it, as all the plastics, tank & seat are off & I looked it over just now in the dark by cellphone flashlight, but best I can tell it's complete, dirty, a little dry-rotted, mostly un-messed with, original Weber carb, 2-into-1 D&D pipe. It's been sitting for several years with a full tank of bad gas. It's got a title & it runs.

He's generally pretty good at putting some modest effort into these projects (he's an automotive machinist by trade) and turning them out at a profit, but well short of a restoration. He said he'd like to ride it, but isn't really interested in hanging on to it long-term.

So what should he do? Aside from changing the old, dried-out belts before he tries running it again, that is...

use it to do wheelies and pick up hot chicks.

All the hot chicks will think it's a Honda Pacific Coast.

First off, which Paso?  I assume the 750?

It's one step from a Pantah motor.  Check the electrics.  Does it have the mirrors?

Tires are a problem if it still has the original 16" rims.  Big problem.  There is one company making a run of them and I think the going rate is about $200 each..

they are not bad looking, but no one knows how they will perform.

Given the Weber, I was assuming the 750 as well, but didn't realize until I looked it up that there was a bigger iteration with a Weber carb before the injected 907ie.

it's got the original wheels, which I recalled were a real issue with this bike. Kind of too bad, as I really like the look of the wheels themselves. Front tire looks largely un-ridden (though probably old and dried out) and I didn't look all that closely at the rear.

Check with the Brits and Euros. Goldentyre is Brit company. I know about them from the SuMo circles as they are one of the limited manufacturers that do 16.5" used by some SuMo racers

leave it as is and take to it with an old fork leg any time you've had a crap day.  $350 worth of smiles right there.

not that this example is the prettiest thing....but I bet it is quite functionally ridable.

I like the overall motard/Dumbostrada concept, but the taste of styling is unfair to that bike. Surely there were other headlight/screen options in keeping with the bike? Well it probably lights up the road effectively.
Good touches like the slave cylinder mod, wheels, etc, but someone buy that bike and save it.

I am troubled by the front end too, the front wheel looks way too small.  Perhaps that's the long Elefant Marzocchis doing that, but then you have the problem of the gas tank being at the wrong angle.

Something just doesn't look right, and it's not just the bubba-licious headlights..  Ugh my eyes.

Which? the Peso or that elefant? I reckon both.

I know this is still way off topic so I'm sorry. I just read the description of that bike and it's got the same size front rim/tire as any of our monsters. I agree it's hideous, but there's a lot of potential there.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  It is a great handling bike, fyi.  The looks are funny but given its "fully enclosed" engine design was revolutionary, you have to give Tamburini some slack. 

That being said, they are mechanically nearly identical to the 89-90 900SS.

Being a young guy and having never heard of this particular model Ducati I had to do some google-fu to pull up some images..."Holy god that's ugly" is what first game out of my mouth lol.  Sorry.

Everytime I see someone busting on the Paso, I wonder if these people are looking at the same bike.

What is there not to like about it?  It was a very innovative bike at the time.

They just look super dated.

Riding one would be like trying to drag knee on a pig ;D

I finished a project on a 906 Paso a few months ago.  The bike ran better (read:  smoother) than any other carbureted Ducati I've played with after the carb was dialed in. 

Dump the fuel.  Change the oil, and both fuel and oil filters.  Add a pair of tires if needed.  Ride.  It's ugly, but it's darned comfortable.

Goldentyre now has an importer in Colorado if he needs rubber.  Last I read she's stocking Paso tires there.

They are excellent handling bikes.  Seriously, if you ever get the chance try it.  Esp the 906

Could never quite get used to that GP derived 16" up front although I rode a Limited for two years. I'm sure the 17" on the 906 felt much better but I moved on to the first 851 instead. My Limited was Cagiva's take on a db1 which cost twice as much and was simply not in my budget. IDK, if you consider what other sport bikes were available in the late eighties, the Paso ain't so bad. Plus, it's a desmo [thumbsup]

I've only ever seen the 750 in person and it was all I could handle. Is the 906 much different?

Ok, you stood next to it.  What was so traumatic about the experience?  I'm seriously curious.

Yes, it's a 900 with six speed so it feels more like a 90s 900ss.

The ergos on the bike are excellent and it has a much stiffer frame than the trellis frames.  The 16" gp style wheel is funky, but you get used to it quickly -- it turns very easily.

It's like a lot of things you'll do in life -- once you're on top, you enjoy the ride and don't worry as much how it looks... 

Its ugly as make the beast with two backs. Not sure how to be more clear on that.  Its just not a bike that does anything for me. I also don't care for the ST's or the Multi's (except the new one, that ones cool)

I love the PASO.

in fact, if you could take a PASO and due a total modern internal makeover, 11 deg motor, modern suspension, etc. it would be perfect... I wouldn't change a thing about the way it looks.

Wish I could find a Paso for 350 bucks. At that price you could turn it into a great bike.

I crashed the living shit out of a 906.  made an amazing mess, esp what my nuts did to the back of the fuel tank.

i'd love a rat 750.  wonder if a monster tank would fit.

not even close.  box frame vs trellis, totally different shape, you name it.

I don't know - I haven't had a chance to get a better look in daylight; I'd initially assumed it had to be a 750 because of the Weber carb, but found out that they did a carbed 907 before they went to fuel injection on the 907ie.

That about sums it up.  [thumbsup]

Who cares how it handles...there are plenty of great handling bikes that don't look like a bag of ass that has been worked over by an ugly stick. Twice!

it has elements of the TT, 851/888, SS, even the diavel's split site radiator influence comes from it

I would totally enjoy one with modern wheels, forks, brakes, motor, shock and exhaust.
20years later the design is fresh to me. just the tech needs updating.

Looks kinda "Interceptor-ish".

So after a couple of days of work to get back brakes & clutch, wiring around the missing ignition cylinder, and rigging up a way to kill the motor (for some reason, the actual kill switch had been disabled), my neighbor Bill and his friend Peter loaded up the $350 Paso, took it past a battery place (where it became a $400 Paso with a new battery) and out to an industrial park that's empty on the weekend. As they were headed out, he told me he was going to figure out if he loved it and wanted to keep it, or unload it.

They were gone for a good three hours and came back with big smiles on their faces. Looks like the bike found a home.

They were running it without the side fairings, and we were talking a bit about how just glassing up some side skirts to visually connect up the top fairing & tank - while leaving most of the motor exposed - might be a good look, especially if you cleaned things up a bit under the tail as well.
