Title: Screen on or off? Post by: Sabre Brian on May 19, 2013, 12:27:15 PM Yesterday I took the screen and headlight cowel/fairing panel off (or whatever the correct term is).
Oh, I have an 08 S4RS. I think it looks shit hot without the screen on, but you definitely get a lot more wind. Who would have thought that pissy little piece of plastic did so much? Although this is the first bike I have had without a full fairing, so I have definitely learned how much that bit of plastic does when it's raining, and to be honest, that was more than I thought too. Being a monster forum, this topic has probably come up a million times but for my benefit, what do you all thinks looks better, screen on or screen off? Brian Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: braando on May 19, 2013, 01:31:14 PM Hi Brian, you must be a top bloke with a name like that [thumbsup] Spelt correctly too I see........ excellent !
As for the bug screen/front headlight fairing/plastic thingy bit , I always thought of it as sacrilegious to remove it, but alas, mine is now adorning the corner wall of my garage along with other bits that I swore i'd never remove. Yet to test it this end though as my Monster has been mothballed for a few months now. Comments around the traps say that there is minimal difference. Vaguely remember Matty (dirt bike boy) saying that he gets less buffeting with it removed. Brian W [coffee] Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: Rowdy on May 19, 2013, 01:36:59 PM I like the way screen compliments the look of my bike. I think the light coloured bike and the continuation of the "racing stripe" helps here.
I have seen plenty of pictures of monsters that look great without the screen on, especially with the addition of lowered headlights and smaller dash units. My personal opinion is that no screen looks best on darker coloured bikes. Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: suzyj on May 19, 2013, 02:49:47 PM I think the screen looks awful. Same with belly pans.
They're naked bikes. They should be naked. Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: Sabre Brian on May 21, 2013, 03:13:08 PM I took it off a week ago now and I have to say, I am agreeing with Suzy. I like it off. Not that it is much work to put it back on if I change my mind anyway. As for the difference it makes, I would have to say the wind force in your face is noticably increased without the screen on, especially when you are slightly exceeding the speed limit.
Brian - You are absolutely right about Brian - It is a top name for top blokes. And only pretentious wankers spell it with a Y Title: Re: Screen on or off? Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: OzzyRob on May 21, 2013, 04:27:38 PM I took mine off as soon as I got it home, same as with the bit o' plastic over the pillion bit.
If I wanted wind protection I'd get a car. Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: WayneR on May 21, 2013, 04:32:17 PM I had it off on my old 620, but have left it on the S2R.
They look 100x better with a tinted screen and the difference it makes in wind protection is enough for me to leave it there. [Dolph] Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: Sundog on May 21, 2013, 06:03:37 PM I took my bikini fairing off my M1100 the day I got it home. Sure there is a little buffeting to contend with but not that much difference really, that is until you get to about 180+k's then it's head-snapping-neck straining eff'ing ridiculous (track riding of course [roll]).
Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: OzzyRob on May 21, 2013, 08:00:49 PM Even at $2.00 I wouldn't call it head snapping.......Maybe years of playing prop\2nd row and head banging have had some benefits. Stronger neck or fewer brains either way it works. [bang]
Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: Sabre Brian on May 21, 2013, 11:48:21 PM Betty - BrYan.
Rob I played a bit of that game myself but I was a back mate. LOL The more I look at the fully naked S4RS, the more I like it. Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: Andy55 on May 22, 2013, 12:36:19 AM The very first thing I did to my Monster the day I got it home from the dealer was unbolt the front fairing.
For me... A Monster doesn't have a fairing , but Hey that's just me. Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: Sabre Brian on May 22, 2013, 03:01:08 AM According to this thread Andy, it's not just you. Cheers mate
Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: Two dogs on May 22, 2013, 04:36:09 PM I do like the "without" look but at this stage have kept mine on for protection of the clocks ,concealing wires and as I do
more higher speed long distance touring now than cafe crawling ( or parked in the garage like Brian's show pony [cheeky] ) any wind protection is appreciated . I did however drop my headlight and clocks so the screen went along for the ride , looks a bit better and now the wind is directed at my body rather than at my face . And the screen support brackets made a big difference reducing the wobble at speed. [thumbsup] Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: braando on May 22, 2013, 07:14:08 PM And how long have you had this wind problem for Desmond. ? [roll]
Any thoughts btw about buying the new diesel Duc. ? (giggle). [coffee] Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: Betty on May 22, 2013, 08:07:17 PM My views have mostly already been expressed ... but before this thread gets off track I thought I'd add:
Mine was removed for a short while to overcome an indicator related rotation, can't say I noticed any difference in wind buffeting ... but i don't travel at speeds where I am likely to notice. I now sport the carbon shorty which is a reasonable compromise - low profile, covers the exposed bits (don't need them to drop) and indicators aren't obscured. Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: dan_t on June 02, 2013, 02:17:41 AM Hey all, with all this talk about ripping off the fairings (screens), does anyone have one laying around that they no longer need?
For a while now I've wanted to see if it's possible to modify an original screen to a lower height & still look good. Just didn't want to hack away at mine, just in case it really doesn't work out........... Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: suzyj on June 02, 2013, 03:33:08 AM It'll still look awful.
Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: Sabre Brian on June 04, 2013, 01:43:26 AM For the record, it's off.

Post by: Sabre Brian on June 06, 2013, 01:44:34 AM My wife took the photo you arses.
Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: suzyj on June 06, 2013, 01:57:35 AM I think he looks very handsome without his helmet on. I also think his bike is quite a bit cleaner than yours. He probably wouldn't even have to pay off the judges at concourse, unlike some I could mention.
Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: braando on June 06, 2013, 01:35:16 PM You guys are just jealous, its a very nice, getting back to nature photo i feel with a lovely bike (with exception to the mirrors of course)
Maybe then, we could start a "My Wife Took the Photo You Arses" thread........ :-\ though its not really appropriate i guess..... [roll] Title: Re: Screen on or off? [roll] Never before, have I experienced so much "wind" noise [roll] from two well known local identities........wind at a thousand paces to be exact........ [coffee] Must have been the pea and ham soup i'd say....... Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: FIFO on June 08, 2013, 10:52:15 PM Brian, my screen was officially off as of today, And what was the Comment from you lovely Partner?? :-X :-X Something along the lines you have ruined your bike what have you done [roll] Title: Re: Screen on or off? Brian, What MisHka (aka Mark) was trying to say was, get rid off the catalytic converter. Post by: Sabre Brian on June 12, 2013, 12:18:00 AM Does it need to be retuned after doing that?
Title: Re: Screen on or off? Post by: FIFO on June 12, 2013, 01:13:15 AM Does it need to be retuned after doing that? Short Answer Yes ;) Long story Provided you have the correct ECU ;) 1 If you still have the stock exhaust ,closed air box, and ECU.the stock ECU is not tunable Not tunable. 2 If you have the Ducati termi slipons with open air box and ECU kit fitted ,the ECU supplied with this kit is Tunable This ecu is suitable for the mid pipe conversion , my self and Mark have just gone through this process. The guys at Dmoto Tuned them up nicely, for $100 while you wait [thumbsup] Mine was more or less right as it was, just needed a small tweek :) 3 Or you can get the Ducati performace full system Ecu and have it tuned (if you don't have the correct ECU) :-\ There are other options, those are the simplest imo :P |
