Title: M696 Have a bug?(starting issue)
Post by: kokis on May 20, 2013, 08:23:51 AM
Ok.
Today it happened again. Sunny day, no rain at night. Was running last night. And when I tried to start engine I hear just pump and solenoid click. OK Noob mistake kill swithc was enabled. Disabled kill switch and nothing. Had to key restart it few time to get engine started.
I can't believe that it is bad contact somewhere. I have this issue periodically.
Is it ECU? Does anyone experience this too?

are you using the throttle advance on startup?

Don't know what is it [cheeky] Just key on and start.

The same thing happened yesterday. I had to kill engine with key at red light, because of clutch hydroline issue. Turned key back on and no start... Had to cycle key few times to get it started.

Looks like issue appears completely randomly. [drool]

I think I need to check kill switch button. As all contacts were cleaned and lubed on starter line, except kill switch.

look up the startup procedures in the manual.

I think you are talking about Choke or about right handle twist. I don't touch them until engine starts.

not a choke. it's a throttle advance.
turn it about half way before startup.
then back it off til the bike idles at 1200

If you hear the solenoid click and the starter motor does not spin you have high resistance in a connection,  a weak battery, a bad solenoid or a bad starter motor.  Oh, and, yes, that is a fast idle lever, not a choke.  Follow Raux' advice!

This video can guide you through the diagnostic process:
Starter Circuit Voltage Drop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ry68G0C2Fyc#)
Yes, it is not a bike, same for bikes though.

howie
It happens once in ... well i would say in 50 times. Battery is 13.1V. My concern that it happens too rarely to be a bad solenoid or starter.

Raux
I don't have issues with started engine.

Yeah i know

just try it
if it doesn't fix the issue we can start looking elsewhere

open 50% BEFORE starting

ok i think i'm getting you now.

when you press the start button you get nothing?

are you waiting for the ECU to cycle before trying to start?

I dunno whether this affects the newer monsters, but the magneti marelli ecu ones have a pretty crap circuit driving the starter contactor.

On my bike, it was responsible for refusing to start about every fifth attempt. I ended up building a buffer. You could do similar with a relay.

Raux
yes, you are right.
Quotewhen you press the start button you get nothing?
Pump works. Silent click under tank. Nothing more ???

Quoteare you waiting for the ECU to cycle before trying to start?
99% of time yes. But when this issue happens I am getting angry and don't wait. And it start even when dash running initialization.

Had a new symptom yesterday...
Pressed start and heard loud click. I believe it is starter. Just click and not spins... Moved bike from it's place and tried again and it starter..
It happened again next time.. Have no idea why. Is it voltage problem?

Unfortunately your problem is intermittent so it won't be that easy to find.  Cary a meter with you and try to test while the problem is happening.  Think of it as a voltage "goes into" problem.  Goes into the solenoid but doesn't come out, bad solenoid.  Goes into starter, no crank, starter problem.

I found it. Starting problem - corroded kill switch.
Starter problem - starter contact was not covered with it's rubber cap and corroded. [roll]
