Title: I'm open to offers from major SBK teams (track day video added)
Post by: stopintime on June 02, 2013, 10:50:35 AM
Did my first two official races this weekend (bucket list thing)

It's a hobby racer class - racing my 800 Monster on street tires - let's-see-what-happens strategy...

Eleven riders on the grid.
Lowering my best lap time by a second/second and a half in qualifying, another second + in the first race.
Unfair competition against fully equipped race bikes (600's/1000's japs/Aprilias), but I did my best and got a 5th and a 7th. Better than expected and soooo much fun!!!!

Nice. Come a long way since I bumped into you in Oslo almost 5 years ago!

Technical question: who or how or where did you get the sharksfin for the swingarm sorted? I haven't had the time to make one up for myself out of cf-kevlar (was going to mould the bottom of the swingarm and use metal hose clamps to hold it on). Just wondering how you attach it to the swingarm etc. It's one of the reasons I haven't finished the last bits to race my Monster in a couple of series here. That, and looking after the woman's race bike is enough effort :).

Awesome. I really haven't been active enough here, so much other stuff going on. That's a tidy solution, I reckon I can whip one of those up with my metal fabricator friend :).

Good work with the trophy, btw. Trophies make everything awesome.

Thank to my sponsor Frosty's Finishes I've become able to build my race bike, buy race tires, travel and participate, practice, eat and drink get the right size number decals or the seat cowl  ;D Thanks Nate! (actually it was impossible to find the right size, so my sponsor helped more than it sounds)

Shorter straights and sharper corners this weekend, so my street tires'd 800 wasn't as 'under-dogged' this time, but still way down on power and tires.

Second in Saturday's race, third today  [beer]

(didn't Hayden's seat just open up?)

We had our annual Ducati Weekend with 140 bikes - from noobs to semi-pro racers. Very cool event with more track time than anyone could handle.  ....and the noise music - GREAT!

I lowered my lap time another .5 seconds and that makes a total of 3.5 this year  [Dolph]

Making the gap closer, not catching  [cheeky]

That's the fun part of my track riding - I can't open up any distance on ANY bike on the straights, so I have to do it during braking and turning - which shouldn't be possible on my bike...

how about a GP ride instead of a SBK ride....I mean....that bike isn't that far from a SBK really...

I like the people in and around SBK better, but I'll entertain any sensible offers - provided they are good career moves  8)

That's the best way to chose a series to race in :). So, you got me inspired (well, so did other things), so I picked up a bike older than me to run in historics here in Aus:

It's won a few trophies, so now I have to live up to the efforts of the previous owner:

I look forwards to seeing how you go in WSBK :D.

So cool Stopintime[clap] - inspiring!

Can you summarize what you have modded on your bike to get it ready to race? What fairing are you running?

I already had the suspension and brakes done, so it was just a few things to satisfy the regulations....

safety wire caliper bolts, oil plugs & filter
install shark fin (mine is custom, but there are other options out there - most require drilling the swingarm)
plug off the oil drain hole in the air box
lead the gas overflow into a catch tank (model air plane type)
remove tail piece (license plate, rear light and turn signals)
remove or tape off headlight
remove mirrors
remove or zip tie the side stand
rent, borrow or buy a transponder (we use MyLaps)
'fill' the tank with foam or Explosafe

The local/National regulations and how hard the inspectors are will also vary, I guess.

Stock fairing with ZeroGravity ST screen

Looks like clip-ons and rear sets as well, right?  I'm surprised not to see sliders. That is a very pretty bike to be racing!

Sliders are a sure way to ruin your bike, as they tend to grab and cause the bike to flip instead of just slide. Unless they're under the bodywork then they're a bad idea for racing/track IMO.

Yes, clip ons on ~3" risers.
CycleCat DRS53 rearsets.

Sliders are not required to race - only for crashing  [cheeky]
I don't know, but maybe they're better for low speed slides and tip overs...

 8) This year's first National Championship C-class (hobby racer) weekend done.

Saturday 4th place - again on a sub 100bhp street bike on street tires.

Racing is fun.... PERIOD  ;D

What tires are you using?

Thank you!

I'm using Metzeler Racetec K3 (their softest street tires) - no tire warmers - ~2 laps and they're ready to go.
The other brands are probably as good, but I know the K3s well and that makes me trust them.
