Ladies and gentlemen, I could use some diagnostic assistance.
Backstory - Riding home one day, "spirited" acceleration, nothing out of the norm. Hit second gear, instant tank-slapper, down me and my 796 go. Dianese saved my torso. Bell saved my skull. Legs got a bit rashed. Bigger concern then the 40-50mph rash is that my bike got all make the beast with two backso'd.
What is now "not so great":
Broke my lower riser. Got a GPR system for both future headshake alleviation and replacement riser.
Ground down my LH rider peg. Purchased.
Ground down my kickstand. Still works, good to go.
Bent down and ground down my shift lever. Did a great job fabbing up a fix. Really was kind of proud of my all steel shroud I made over what was left of the aluminum shift, but purchased a gently used one anyway.
Broke out my Flass-to-Pass trigger. Unit was pretty messed, orderd a new one.
Scratched on the LH alternator cover. NOT spending 600+ on a new one.
Bar-End CRG Arrow mirror. Ground into dust. Not a whole lot I can do aside from replace it. It did save my bars from a rash.
Broke the metal backing to the LH front turn signal behind the light itself. Still working on a fix.
Stripped out the threaded hole to my LH rear turn signal. Still working on a fix.
Scratched the shit out of my exhaust cover. (Luckily didn't hurt the Termi's) Hammer out the cover, repainted, bent the bracket back.
Scratched and cracked the LH tank cover (and a bit on the RH). Still researching replacements. (I'd like to hear of any cheap place to but new plastics.)
RH handlebar switch issues. Engine would start when I turned the key on. Took the RH switch apart and found that the black wire had come unsoldered. Resoldered it together and it now functions as it should.
All that and some miscellaneous scratches and gouges. For the most part, I feel that me and the bike were both pretty lucky.
What I am having issues with:
Issue 1, When I first turn the key on, it primes as it normally should, but doesn't stop. Just keeps "priming" until the bike is started. Any thoughts on why this would happen would be appreciated.
Issue 2, Higher (3-4000) rev when it starts. Maybe lasts 3-4 seconds, but then drops down to normal idle (13-1500). That isn't really a big deal. But when I crack the throttle, it comes back to a higher (3-4000) rev before going back down to idle. I checked the cable and that seems very responsive. No noticeable slack. I'm thinking it could be throttle position sensor? Maybe it got internally knocked around a bit? Is that something that can be reset?
Issue 3, has anyone ever bought replacement "tank caps" from anywhere? From what I've seen, they are pretty pricey if going through Ducati. (What?!? Nobody's surprised?) There are whole bike kits (fender, caps, rear cover, windscreen base) available on eBay for 400 shipped from China, but I'm not sure I trust that. Well, I'll be honest, I don't trust it. I am hoping to hear of somebody having excellent luck with those. Ultimately, it's aesthetic, so no BIG deal, but the monster in its glory is SOOO Beautiful, I feel like I owe it.
So, any words of wisdom on issue 1 and 2 would be greatly appreciated.
Pointers on issue 3 would be appreciated.
If anyone needs the upper and lower Riser assembly, let me know. I ordered brand new replacements and then opted for a steering damper.
Thanks folks. Sorry for the size.
And it anyone is curious, I have some great motivational ATGATT pictures (my leg sans skin, My jacket worn down to the pads) as well as post thrashed 796.
Regarding issue 1
My S2R 800 does the same thing - maybe it's normal for your bike as well....
My concern is that it didn't do that before our "disagreement". It would prime for 3-5 seconds. ???
It sounds like a problem with the bike's software. How to get it checked without a mechanic and some expensive Ducati instrument is de million dollar question, for me? I feel it should be able for a bike owner (or car) to hook his bike to a laptop and do a engine check.
The pump should cycle off. Easy cheap first. Check the fuel pump relay. Pull it and test with an ohmmeter. If there is continuity between 30 and 87 that is your problem.
Ray, I agree. It would be nice to have an OBD type system that's available.
Howie, I appreciate the tech tip. I'll scope that out when I get home and see what that comes back at. Upon thinking of that line of thought, maybe it is running a prime cycle constantly and that may play into issue 2. If it's constantly feeding a "prime" amount of gas on top of what is being told by the sensor, it could be over fueling when I release the throttle. Which may give the momentary higher revs. Howie, I hope your theory just pointed to some real progress. Thanks.
The fuel pump runs constantly when the engine is running and the pressure is controlled by the pressure regulator. The timing and duration of injector opening is controlled by the ecu.
I don't believe the pump constantly priming can cause an over fueling issue.
Okay Ducpainter, you have a pretty valid point.
I disconnected the battery in an effort to "reset" everything, and that is when the increased priming time started (I think... upon recollection, it may have happened before too).
I guess I should try swapping the ECU, I still have the OEM one, pre-Termignoni.
I assume that when you disconnected the battery you disconnected the ground?
Overkill... I disconnected both.
Issue 2
QuoteThat isn't really a big deal. But when I crack the throttle, it comes back to a higher (3-4000) rev before going back down to idle.
Pay attention to that. I had same issue on 696. When I was releasing throttle, rev dropped down and paused on 4k then slowly went down to idle.
I had to clean\replace fuel filter + clean injectors with special addition to fuel. You may also want to replace\cleanup sparks. And cycle key on-off 3 times to reset tps.
Issue 3
Caps are expensive. And not very good quality, same as stock ones.
Here is bussiness that makes them http://www.dalio.it/ (http://www.dalio.it/) you may want to contact them directly.
Or you can find someone who can restore you cracked caps. It works. I had to restore front fender once.
Thanks Kokis, I'm going to check the FP relay just for the sake of cancelling out possibilities then move onto what you mentioned. I have a buddy that sells BG products that has a great fuel system cleaner.
As far as resetting the TPS, is it just on/off as quickly as possible or am I waiting a set amount of time?
I appreciate the insight.
QuoteTPS, is it just on/off as quickly as possible or am I waiting
Wait until text msg line stops running(each time) and don't touch fast idle and throttle. Easy.
And don't buy too big canister of fuel system cleaner. It might be just an additive like 5-10 drops to galon of gas or all in one fuel(0.5 liter was enough for me)
This procedure will not hurt anyway. But if I am right and you ignore it you will end up that one cylinder will stop while riding somewhere mining your own bussiness. Lol, that happened to me, it was a lot of fun to get home from outofcity on 1 cylinder with passenger.
