Title: HUGE ISSUE EMERGENCY!!!!!!
Post by: adpeacock on June 03, 2013, 06:26:43 PM
Hey everyone,
I just pulled my bike out getting it ready for my BRC I went to get the tires checked.  When I stopped at the tire pump and my bike started leaking oil out of a tube.  I think it was the oil excess tube but I am not sure, but I am dire need of help because I am not sure if I should ride it tomorrow.

There is no 'oil excess tube' on a Ducati.

Where is the tube located on the bike?

It was on the left front it was pointing straight down.  I have a M620.

That is the drain for the airbox.

Did you just change your oil, or is the oil over full?

I think it is because the oil is overfull.  I haven't ridden it in a while.

If the oil is overfull there will be more frothing and mist in the cases and will enter the breather and end up in the airbox.

It's not a huge issue if it's only slightly over full. If it's way over you might try to get some out of there.

Where does it register in the sight glass on the right side?

I can not see the fluid in the window.

When the bike is running it is frothing in the left window.  But I can not see the oil in the right window.  Is it something for me to worry about I have never had this problem and I have changed my own oil in it before in the past.

Which "left" window? The oil sight glass in on the rhs...

With the motor turned off and the bike standing upright on its tyres (not leaning on the side stand) where does the oil level show in the sight glass?

Sorry for asking what may seem like stupid questions.... but....  has the bike had a tip-over?

No not at all I just pulled it out of storage and put oil in it and changed the air filter about 3 weeks ago.

... when you put oil in it..... how did you judge how much oil to put in it?

I put how much oil the owners manual says.

Did you check the oil in the sight glass after "filling with the required amount of oil" ?

No oil level in sight glass is A Bad Thing. I'd be worried about that.

if it's overfilled and fresh clean oil, it may look like no oil because there is no top line?

That's a damn fine point sir.

Before the problem I could see where the top line of the oil was.  So I am confused is this a huge issue?  Should I ride it today?

IMO it is not a huge issue. It isn't going to blow up. It will continue to push oil into the airbox until the level goes down.

It could start leaking somewhere if you have a gasket that isn't perfect.

If you have a turkey baster and a piece of tubing you can connect to it you can remove some oil through the oil fill.

In the future when you change oil put about 3/4 of the recommended amount in and then start the motor and shut it off after a warm up and check it in the sight glass. Top it up as necessary. Very few Ducs will take all of the recommended amount.

Be sure that you are checking the oil level in the sight glass properly. Which is on level ground, with the bike upright - NOT leaned on the side stand.

On my 1100evo, just a few degrees off of true vertical makes a surprising difference. It can easily go from showing too low to showing too high with just a slight list to one side or the other.

Since I don't yet have a proper stand in my inventory, I stabilize the bike with bungee cords attached to secure fastening points, then carefully place a 2x4 under the side stand and measure for true vertical with a long bubble leveler against the back tire. I can then calibrate the lean angle with smaller bits of whatever material is handy placed under the sidestand.

It's very Rube Goldberg, but effective and accurate. (And cheap... working strictly with native household elements  :)).

Are you sure you're not seeing the sight glass completely covered with oil?  Is it oil colored, (brown or red or whatever color you used) or is it clear where you can see the shiny metal baffle behind it?  I have seen crankcases so full that the oil is well above the sight glass, even when sitting on the side stand.

The "required amount" is too much for a bike that hasn't been completely drained....which is impossible during a "pull the drain plug and change the oil filter" service.  ALWAYS fill the oil to the recommended level between "full" and "low" on the sight glass, not to some theoretical required volume.  This also applies to forks.

Oops....guess I might have looked at "Page 2" before posting....

Still applicable, I suppose.

I sit on the bike with a carpenters level on the tank and read the window with a small mirror taped to a yardstick.  [clap]

You guys are making this too complicated. Hold the bike upright with your right hand on the throttle, bend down and look. No levels, no wood shims, ect...   Or just get a Baxley sport chock ;D

Hey everyone, okay I am diving more into my oil in the airbox problem and there is oil all inside it.  Does anyone know how oil would get in the air box?  the oil way I can think is because of a worn ring but I really do not want to take apart the whole engine if I don't have to.  I can see where the oil is going but I have no idea how it is getting in there.  If anyone has any ideas that would be great.  I know how to check the oil level and I have drained it all.

If you were overfilled with oil, that would explain oil in the airbox.

AFAIK you can get oil in the airbox trough the crankcase breather valve, or trough the throttle body. The hose from the breather valve should be in the left side rear corner of the airbox. See if there is oil coming out of it.

Ya can't get oil in the airbox if ya remove the breather hose.

Just sayin'.

What will that effect on the performance level of the bike?

Well if you overfill the oil with no breather tube, there'll be a pretty profound effect on the performance, I should think.

I'd be concerned about handling issues as well.

Oil in the airbox just leaks out slowly and does no harm...in most circumstances.

+1

So, its neither a huge issue nor an emergency.

Too much oil at last fill, which you've since drained.  When you refill don't add the full amount specified in the service manual... add less and check the level in the sight glass... topping up if required to no more than the upper indication mark.  Run motor, stop motor, let stand for a minute or so and recheck.

Job done.  Problem solved.
