Title: Crack/pop sound on high speeds on new tires?
Post by: Bianca on June 05, 2013, 11:30:23 PM
Just wondering if this is cause for concern or normal. I had new battleax 023 tires installed on my Monster 695 about 500 miles ago, and have noticed a periodic and random popping sound from the front on high highway speeds of 75mph or above. Is it the tire settling in? Road noise? Something other than the tires? Sometimes it's one crack/pop sound, or three in a row, but it's random, and must be loud if I can hear it over the wind noise. I didn't hear this with my old tires. I also got a new chain about 700 or 800 miles ago.

did you install it?
take it back to a shop and get the tire checked. won't hurt and could help

and double check your chain tension.

It's possible it's the tire reacting to pavement irregularities.

Did you have the same tires before?

Worth getting it check out for piece of mind.

Tire make sounds??
Are you sure that sound comes not from airbox?

Thanks guys. I didn't install the tires myself. And I thought the same, ducpainter -- that it was just coming from road irregularities, but it's unsettling to me whenever it happens, especially since I'm riding at 80mph, so I thought I'd ask. They are different tires than I had before (Bridgestone vs. Continentals). The only reason I think tire is because that was what changed immediately prior to experiencing the noise. It could be the chain slapping against something. And, kokis, what makes you think it's the airbox and is that something I'd need to get checked out?

Is the front fender securely attached?

Popping in airbox comes from the front-bottom, under your arms from the place you would never expect sounds to come from. It sounds like you clap your hand to your naked upper leg part.
If i am right - there is nothing to worry about too much, you just need valve adjustment or change fuel type. And TPS reset also can help (cycle key 3 times ON-OFF and wait for dashboard to initialize)

Plastic front fender will just brake on high speed shaking if it is not securely attached.

500 miles - is too much for tire to set in and there is no moving part to make noises.
