Title: sticky throttle
Post by: Privateer on June 08, 2013, 09:02:47 PM
Noticed recently when I take my hand off he throttle it takes a second to snap back to closed.  I presume the cable needs some lubricating?

1) is that the right solution? (i know, e-diagnosing can be challenging)
2) if so, is there a 'right' way to do it?

thanks.

I would detach the throttle wire on one end and then see if the grip rotates freely.  If not then its not the wire.  JMTC

What bike/mileage?

If you only have a single cable, try operating the cam at the throttle bodies, if that moves freely give the cable a lube. Saves having to disconnecting anything to check.

Definitely check for throttle body stiction at the cam to help isolate the issue.  Also take apart the throttle assembly at the grip (2 bolts) and make sure the cable is greased there and engages properly.  Pull the throttle tube off and make sure the bar and tube are good and clean.  The G2 aluminum throttle tube is a nice upgrade for smoother overall action.

thanks everyone.
I checked the throttle cam first and seemed fine.

Then, I'll sheepishly admit it was nothing wrong with the throttle at all.  A couple weeks ago I had a tip over after stopping on a soft shoulder.  On the right side.  Which apparently pushed my bar end mirror onto the end of the grip causing it to stick.  Pulled the end off a little and put an old oil drain crush washer onto it for good measure.  All good as new.

What's that line about simple solutions are usually the easiest?

The fix is simple, sometimes finding what to fix is the hard part.

Least you know for next time.....here's to hoping there isn't a next time.  [beer]
