Title: So I put my battery in backwards Help!!! (yes im an idiot)
Post by: slobuddy on June 11, 2013, 02:31:33 PM
So first things first I'm probably the biggest idiot in the world for putting a new battery in backwards but hey it happened.  Now I'm trying to figure out how to remedy the problem.

I determined that the main fuse 32 was bad and i replaced it which somewhat gave the bike life.  I can see the healights turn on but that is about it.  It seems like replacing the fuse and making sure that all other fuses were working should have remedied the problem but no luck. There is no power to the dashboard nor the started.  The bike is not even clicking when i press the starter.  Could I have fried something bigger or should the fuse have stopped it from major damage.  If anyone has any clue of a next move it would be awesome!

cheers

Kyle

Which model monster?

If it's a mid-2000s one, you're not the first to have done this. You've blown the starter driver on your ecu, but that's it. See this thread for details:

I bought a used 996 that the PO had connected the battery backwards.

I had to replace the ecu.

Maybe suzyj can figure a way to fix yours.

Sorry, the new monsters are completely different, with a different ecu and gauges, so I can't help much.

It's worth checking the rest of your fuses though.

After all, they've saddled us with plastic tanks since 2006.

I guess I could but I am the second owner and that my morals would make me feel bad lol.

Guess I will see if there is a local shop where i can avoid paying dealer prices of $120 and hour to work on her

I wonder if putting in the red key did anything to it

Nowhere near as much as connecting the battery backwards.

I have seen about three of these in the last two years...hook up battery battery backward and "zowie", the ecu is instantly fried.  I'm not familiar with your specific model, but some Ducatis over the years have had a small fuse dedicated specifically to the ecu.  Check around the ecu and see if you're one of the lucky ones.

If not, www.autoecu.com (http://) can rebuild your ecu without the need to buy another one.  It'll come back with the OE map (I think), but it's only a couple of hundred dollars.  I used these folks when I had an ecu fail on a 906 Paso and couldn't find an inexpensive replacement.  They rebuilt that one for around $400, but it took a few months as they had to special order many of the internal bits.....but the did get it done and worked perfectly!

When you turn key ON - pump starts? If no - fried ECU or dead wires. You will have to install your ecu to another bike to see if it works or not.

Hey this is a very old thread, but thought I'd post in case anyone reads through these posts looking for help.

On the Monster 1100EVO ABS, possibly other similar year Monsters too, there are three fuses on the right side of the bike, separate from the normal fuse box. You'll need to remove the fuel tank to get access to them. Two of the fuses (the two closest to the front of the bike) are ABS fuses, but the third, the one closest to the back of the bike, is the 30amp "regulator fuse."

If you hooked up your battery backwards there's a good chance you've blown that fuse. Replace it and with any luck you'll be good to go.
