Title: O2 Optimizer / Power Commander for Ducati 696 Post by: metroplex on June 26, 2013, 11:46:25 AM I finally got my kit today, I've been waiting well over a week for it to ship out from the vendor. The O2 Optimizer has a USB port covered by a rubber boot:

I plan to use the O2 optimizers with the default setting, and lean it out a little by little to get the best of both worlds in the closed loop mode. I'm going to keep the open loop fuel cells at 0 because I have the DP ECU w/ the carbon termi's and race air filter and race intake lid, and Dynojet's supplied maps were developed using the stock ECU. I plan to also play with the cold start fuel setting and maybe the accel pump. Looks like Dynojet have had a complete design rethink on their PCV optimiser(s). Looks nothing like the things which came with my M696 PCV.(http://i325.photobucket.com/albums/k395/fusionvic/20130626_153521-1_zps638afc5d.jpg) (http://s325.photobucket.com/user/fusionvic/media/20130626_153521-1_zps638afc5d.jpg.html) Either that, or they are making DIP switches look a lot like mini USB ports these days..... What improvements are you hoping for by leaning out the devices who's sole purpose... is to trick the ECU into allowing more fuel within closed loop?Title: Re: O2 Optimizer / Power Commander for Ducati 696 Post by: metroplex on June 26, 2013, 12:57:11 PM Interesting. What improvements are you hoping for by leaning out the devices who's sole purpose... is to trick the ECU into allowing more fuel within closed loop? Someone else here said they bought their PCV for their Monster last December straight from Dynojet, and the Optimizer had DIP switches. I contacted Dynojet about this and asked them a few times to confirm the 696 Optimizers had USB ports because everyone here on this forum claimed otherwise - they adamantly said that it did have a USB port. The only Optimizers that had DIP switches were the ones designed for single channel O2 sensors. They might have made this change in 2013, I did not inquire about the date. I did read about another Ducati owner that had the USB port on their Optimizer and that was over a year ago. The Optimizer appears to be a voltage divider. It offsets/biases the narrowband O2 sensor voltage to command (what Dynojet claims) to be a default AFR of 13.6:1 One forum thread said it was similar to XIED for Harley Davidsons. The instructions say that when connected via USB, you can lean/enrich the Optimizer setting which effectively raises/lowers the AFR in the closed loop cells. Instead of a fixed 13.6, I'm hoping to lean it out slightly towards 14:1 to remove the snatchy closed loop operation without the gas mileage hit of staying with 13.6 but I won't know until I experiment. maybe too many of us were asking for dip switch info Title: Re: O2 Optimizer / Power Commander for Ducati 696 Post by: Raux on June 26, 2013, 10:56:38 PM I can't explain to twll you how backwards you have this
the lower afr smooths out the closed loop which is lumpy to meet emissons at certain rpms ie where the hole in the tq curve is if you raise the afr you go right back to the siuation they fixed if anything i would lower the afr to run cooler and create a bit more power down low Title: Re: O2 Optimizer / Power Commander for Ducati 696 Post by: ungeheuer on June 26, 2013, 11:44:36 PM One advantage (to some) of the old dipSW style optimisers was that you could, if you wished, just run the optimisers alone without the PCV. (Handy for those who just wanna fatten up the closed loop.... FatDuc style). I wonder if this new design allows optimisation without the PCV??
Not that it's a big deal or any great loss if it can no longer be done. Title: Re: O2 Optimizer / Power Commander for Ducati 696 Post by: metroplex on June 27, 2013, 12:17:58 AM I understand that the standard closed loop probably aims for 14.7 AFR stoich based on how narrowband O2 sensors operate. The default optimizers are set for 13.6 AFR, which is richer than 14.7 However, based on what others have experimented with, I could probably head up to 14.0 and still improve rideability without using so much fuel. Again, I just have to experiment and its a matter of moving the sliders in the software. I'm not trying to achieve maximum power/torque in closed loop operation. 13:1 is probably a better target AFR for making the most powre in open loop operation.
The Optimizers are not part of the PCV, but I believe you still need the PCV to add fuel into the closed loop portion of the map for transient fueling because the ECU is still in closed loop operation. I believe one person tried the O2 Optimizer alone and noted some hesitation when cracking open the throttle, but this was maybe 1-2 years ago (He did have the USB port) on another model of Ducati (MS1200?). |
