Title: S2R Luggage rack?
Post by: Kabulpostie on June 27, 2013, 02:02:26 PM
I am planning a long ride this summer and am looking for a luggage rack that will sit over the rear seat cowl. Everything I have been able to find online sit far back. I hate the ones that hang over the fender, I won't have a passenger so I want the weight centered as possible, there is the added advantage of not having to remove or scratch the cowl. Any ideas?

If you can't buy it, build it.

Have you looked at the ventura system?

Ahhh that's the rub, besides being pretty much mechanically inept I don't have my bike for another month..I have looked at the Ventura and if I have to settle that's the one I'll go with.

I think you can turn the rack thing around and hang it over the seat.

Alternatively just use the "hoop" attachment and take the seat cowl off.  Put the bag on the seat and tie it to the rack.

+1 one for this. between a tank bag, back pack, and duffle bungee corded to the back of the seat you will be set.

'eric' (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?action=profile;u=8615 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?action=profile;u=8615)) here went from SoCal to the arctic circle with a Ventura Rack that I installed on his S2R800.

It was ~ a year ago, but IIRC it fit on alright.

If it gives you problems I think I can walk you through it.

Thanks for the help and ideas guys. I think I am probably going to go with a waterproof bag like the twisted throttle Dryspechttp://www.twistedthrottle.com/twisted-throttle-dryspectm-d38-rigid-waterproof-motorcycle-dry-bag

All the people who have written reviews seem to really like it. The trip I am planning is going to be from North Idaho down to Yuma, AZ where I am currently working, pretty much a way to get the bike down to the land of 365 day riding weather (if you don't mind riding in 120 degree heat lol). I was originally interested a rack because I was hoping to keep the rear cowl on and have a way to mount luggage that wouldn't contact it. However, it seems like the PIB and expense is not worth the hassle since I can just mail the cowl and pick it up when I arrive.

Eric, thanks for chiming in, your trip is one of the reasons I'm doing this.  I kept on thinking about having the bike shipped to me and making excuses, so the thing has been sitting in Idaho  since last year..I've decided that as much as I love it and as pretty as it is, it's going to be my primary mode of transportation. She deserves be in her natural element! Although Southern AZ is pretty much devoid of corners...

Only on that side... although I still have to make a trek to find them.  You aren't too far from the Anza Borrega park in CA, though, and there are some nice roads there.  Also the alternate road that parallels the I-8 just over the border is nice.

These are all over ebay.  Seem kind of cheapish, but hard to tell the size.

if thats anything like the deisgn they are biting off, it requires the original tail to mount to, tail chops need not apply. but someone should find out first. I need that pretty badly.

the givi saddle bags mentioned below come with  T680 hangers. you could probably bend the bars to fit a chopped tail.
