Title: Any Mod ideas for my 2012 696?
Post by: Ryanc7 on July 01, 2013, 07:09:17 PM
Hello everyone I have my 2012 696 and I love her and was thinking of what to mod next. I already have the termis carbon exhaust kit as well as some other esthetic mods. But was wondering if anyone had some more ideas for more torque and throttle response and not going to lie would like the front tire to lift a little easier on command. (I know many will say to upgrade to a bigger bike but i love everything about my 696 and if I had a bigger bike I would still be modding the hell out of it ) Thinking of going to 14t in the front but what else?

So if anyone has any suggestions? Waiting to hear some ideas

14T for sure.  Do you already have the Termis/ECU/filter installed?  Have pics?

Maybe add a light flywheel. That and the 14 tooth sprocket will really improve the acceleration and response (and wheelies).
Suspension work as mentioned is a good thing.
With the pipes, airbox/filter mods and ecu that are fitted, it would be a nice overall package.

lightweight flywheel is a great mod for the small motor.

14t is good or go up in the rear - the people who are using the 696 for tricks all do this and the rest is stock.

the throttle bodies on the 696 are the same as the 1100 and rather large, I feel the airbox could be larger for all the new monsters with larger opening to give them more grunt. I think they have such small openings and size for emissions and noise regulations.

or, get pod filters and get rid of the airbox to let it breathe more.

you could go to a port and polish specialist and clean up the intake and especially the exhaust track. the area around the valve guides are pretty chunky and poorly streamlined

Hey Raux, do you mean like TPO or Corse Dynamics pod/velocity stack kits?

any that will fit.

the airbox is EXTREMELY tight opening.
even with the 'termi' top it's still only 2" diameter IIRC
and it's on the wrong plane to the air direction.

I've been wanting to build a larger box with an 848 style filter with the side tank openings the actual intake area

Ohlins DU-737 shock built for you and spring for your weight. Not expensive (~$625) and really makes the bike work if you set the sag and damping properly. Not a "premium" Ohlins but the result is major and will make you smile.

:D. I was trying to save the man some cash.  Parts and mod seem easy with the 1100 now that I forgot about the sweat, pain and cash you guys greatly contributed  to the cause before I posted!   [bow_down]

The fork swap is the best mod you can do to a 696, the rear shock is fine, the problem with the 696 suspension are the forks. I spent thousands modding a 696 the biggest bang for the buck is the FS it really transformed the bike. There's a boat load of post here on how to do it and write up's on results

Totally disagree. The newer Marzocchi fork isn't bad. The Sachs shock/spring as delivered on a 2011 onward is marginal, and that's being polite about it. There's a pretty fair consensus about this too.

Maybe you're a bit out of date with a 2009..., or possibly you weigh 300 lbs?! ;D

There's so much you can do to a 696. Your imagination's the limit (as well as your budget) but the monster can fit so many different parts from other ducati's also.

The big mod that I'm doing (2010 Monster 696 ABS) is having catalyst reaction put in cartridges. The gentleman there thought most of the bike including rear suspension was pretty good but basically most folks seem to agree that the front suspension  is sh*te. Although I'm a diyer, I'm not attempting this one since there's machining involved. I'm looking forward to the difference and tentatively looking at Tues taking it to the shop and hopefully next weekend - evaluation time...otherwise known as a fun twisty ride! :)

Those are Showa forks, correct? The OP has the newer Marzocchis which aren't bad. No idea what your pal is telling you about the rear unless you have something different than the Sachs which came with the 2011 bikes. The Sachs is NOT compliant and oversprung for most without a passenger.
