Title: Throttle keeps reving gradually higher while grip at fixed positions (2001 M600)
Post by: Radracer6 on July 25, 2013, 06:55:23 AM
I'm wondering if anyone experienced this or know what's going on.

On my 2001 Carburated Monster when I open the throttle while idling or riding, lets say to half turn of the wrist or a quarter turn and hold it there, the bike doesn't stop at that particular rev but keeps going up in revs as if i was still turning the handle

I notice on my sport classic i can turn the throttle at idle about 1/4 and revs will stay at let's say 2500 rpm until I twist more. On the monster 1/4 turn and the revs will keep going up and up as if was gradually twisting to wide open.

Is this a difference b/w Fuel Injected and Carburated bikes or is something up with the throttle on the monster. I've checked the cables for kinks and tension but cables are lubed and loose enough.

I recently cleaned the carbs so i know those aren't clogged but the issue is still present before and after. I Was told it might be a vacuum leak so I looked at the boots and they did not seem to have cracks in them, sprayed some wd40 on them to see if rpms would jump but they didn't.

Only small cracks i found were on the airbox breather hose that's connected to a black box toward the rear. Does air get pulled in from there? Wondering if that's the leak. I sprayed wd40 on it and it looked like it got sucked in to the hose but rpms didn't change

One thing I also noticed though was that a vent hose off the carb was also missing (i found a similar thread from a poster years back so I've attached the pic he provided) it seems there should be a hose connected to to black nipple run off on the carb (located right next to the nipple where the fuel connects) Wonder if this could be it.

yes - the Injected bikes don't have vac lines to leak.

Cleaned the carbs how? To what degree?

That hose, connected to the air box and running back is for the crank case breather system. Would be good to replace or seal it as you're allowing unfiltered air into your intake.

Hey it's two hoses I was referring to. One is missing that connects from that black vent in carb in the picture to the side air triangle on the bike. The other is breather hose from airbox to the back of bike black box (this one has some cracks) will replace. So that hose couldn't be a vacuum leak right? jsut a breather?

In regards to Carbs I rejetted using factroypro kit, took them apart, soaked in gasoline and cleaned, blew out passages with compressed air, adjusted floats to 14mm and put back together and synched them. Throttle issue was happening before touching anything on bike and after.

They are hoses that are part of the CV system and like to be vented into still air, thus the two ugly still air pods they should connect to. The curved metal tubes have hoses with damping cannisters iirc that go into one pod and the vent hose off the breather T piece goes into another pod. If these vents get exposed to turbulence, side drafts etc the CV pistons might misbehave.
Check you haven't lost the tiny o-ring from under the plastic carb caps. Its very small and sits in a recess in the rim top of the carb.

TPO have a hose kit to eliminate the pods with no issues.
Powerbarn.com have rebuild kits if something is missing or worn.

Double check for a misalgned piston/slide spring, sticking cables or pinched diaphram.

So I replaced the hose from carb to pod and taped up the cracked breather from the air box and boom the throttle revs fine now. Now I'm having another problem. I put everything back together revs right but its running a bit rough and when I ride it sputters, feels like its running on one cylinder and I'm giving it gas and the bike doesn't want to go at all. It turns off in me in first as well.
