Title: ST2 cams in my 900 V head
Post by: ccm900 on July 26, 2013, 02:48:03 PM
I've been doing some reading and came across st2 cams being an upgrade from the cams in the 900 engine. I have the V2 heads, which is a good start I hear as opposed to the W heads. I'm wondering though what all needs to be done to get the ST2 cams in? DO I Just need the cams and its a strait swap? Or are there other things that need to be done/changed to get it to "work." I'm running FCR's also so I'm just looking for a little extra something instead of going all out to a 944 kit. TIA!

Good luck finding the cams   ;)  the 900 IE cams are not far off the ST2 ones

I would fit hi comp pistons and port the heads before going to bigger cams.

I think its a suck it and see job.  Sounds like you're going to need to get the books out check the timing (open, dwell and close positions) and measure the valve length etc.  I'm assuming that you have a carbie M900 so you may have to play with the jets.  If you're going this far then you may as well lightly port the heads, 3 angle valve seats oh and valves to get the most from your upgrade. whilst keeping some ridablity.

All in all it could be worth getting a second head to play about with on the bench to make sure the mechanics work, or just getting some faster cams that you know will work...

Hmmm, came across a pair on the bay for $500. Might keep looking. Not too sure how much more it would be to port and polish, plus high comp pistons...I think I'm starting to dream a bit. Funds definitely don't allow right now.

I guess I'm just curious as well because everything I've read hasn't really lead to a conclusion...

But I guess it's right here on Chris' site that he uses it in conjunction with other things to get big hp out of the 2v motor

I've not seen any fact to support st2 cams working well in otherwise std carby bikes.  I asked bruce Meyers what his experience was and he said:

The st cams work good in a 900. The fuelie 900 cam makes top end at the cost of midrange. The st seams to be the best of both worlds. With that said, I have never just dropped in the st cams. Have always done other stuff at the same time so can't say about stock motor.

the 900 carb cam works great in my hot 750, so maybe the longer duration is what the 900 needs when making power into the higher rpm range.
