Title: Putting Sports Classic wire wheels on a 2004 M1000
Post by: MonsterMitsu on July 27, 2013, 11:45:37 AM
Ok, So I bought some used wheels off a Sports Classic. Took them apart and powder coated the rims, hub and spokes. Replace the chrome nipples with Stainless. They Look great! But... They Don't fit! A couple problems that I need to find a way around. Ok 1st problem I noticed is the spacer on the Clutch lever side is to big by about ~10mm. Hey No problem right? I could just put them in my lathe and turn off 10mm. So I looked a little closer... Well now the calipers don't line up with the rotors. I thought I could fix that too! Just mill off a little from the mounting surface. Looked a little closer. When I put the calipers over the rotors, they don't clear the spokes!!! Mean they are just barely rubbing the spokes. So now I'm like...  [bang]

So now I need some advice...

Can I just bolt on sports classic calipers?

Do I need to get a whole new front end?... Sports classic forks, brakes and rotors?... and if so. Is the triple clamp the same width as a M1000?

Not sure about front end, but, your brake components should be, "remove and re-install", but, it should be "plug 'n play" . . .

Only if you were installing Alpina wheels on a SC would you need to replace the calipers, IIRC

So your saying get SC rotors and calipers and the M1000 forks will hold the calipers in the correct spot?

As I said, IIRC, you can re-use your rotors/calipers . . . but, if you also have the SC rotors/calipers, then, you're set

To Clarify, I don't have any SC stuff other than the wheel set. And my current calipers wont line up with the rotors. To top it off, if I were to mod the calipers mounting flange by removing ~5 mm they still don't clear the spokes from the inside of the rotor.

Thanks Twizted, that was helpful. And by going to Ducati.ms I was able to determine that I could make the 4 pot calipers work with the spokes if I machine the block down.

So it looks like I'm going to take and mod my current calipers to fit. I'll need to remove ~5 mm from the mounting flange(I'll have 12 mm left) and a little less from the back inside corner.

Are we to assume that you had no issues with the rear tire then??

Have yet to find out. I'm sure the caliper will clear the spokes but not sure about the alignment.
