There is a big difference between watching something online and actually living through it.

An example: watching racers crash their motorcycles on tv has never made me second guess doing track days. My 100 mph highside was a different matter.  I was quite nervous the first few times back on the track.

Anything and everything is too easy to find in the lawless anarchy of the world wild web.

Knowing this - as you do - you have to exercise a little self censorship along personal moral and stomach wrenching guide lines.  Educating your kids to do the same is vital.

There are those who suggest government ought impose filters to censor the sick shite away, but I'm even less comfortable with that notion than the thought of there being sick shite available.

I find that with not much effort, not seeing crap you don't wanna see or know about is pretty easy.

I use my "trusty" urban dictionary to look up slang definitions, sparing me the visuals.

Agree, I think that one eroded a bit of my soul.  I've witnessed some pretty messed-up stuff and I thought I could sit through anything the internet could spew out but I do wish I'd never seen that.

For me, it's not about safe filtering, censorship, or restricting internet freedom.  The ability to access any information we choose is truly an advancement of civilization.  While we all know, on an abstract level, that people are doing horrible sick things to each other and themselves, it's just depressing to witness confirmation of how low a human being can sink.

Horrible images can spur compassion and positive change - film of Holocaust victims being bulldozed into mass graves and photos of children maimed in war zones might be traumatizing but are important images to society to face.  Images like two-girls-one-cup just desensitize and degrade.  There's a vast gray area between the "good" and "bad" extremes.  Not sure if civilization is still advancing but maybe we just have learn how to take the bad with the good and see how things turn out.

The world is not just unicorns and rainbows and sometimes it just hurts to face reality.

I agree but I was appalled that it took Government intervention to get Facebook to take the beheading videos down.
They claimed it was a relevant international news story.

This week its death and sexual violence threats being made on Twitter that's in the news headlines.

i wasn't aware that it did. i thought they were prompted to act by public outcry and negative press.
