Hi Folks-
Tried this post on the other side without luck. I recently picked up a 2005 Monster 1000DS (fuel injected) with 17K miles. Doesnt' look abused and I've been doing the usual sevice...tires, clutch, new belts, etc. The bearings on one of the timing belt tensioner/rollers were frozen so I have replaced the bearings on both tensioners and also replaced the fixed rollers. While tightenting the timing belts today, I noticed what appears to be play in the cam driveshaft (lay shaft) bearing, allowing the shaft to move slightly when I squeeze the belts. I noticed this as tightening the vertical belt appears to change the tension on the horizontal belt slightly and vice versa. I'm finding it disturbing that this shaft bearing could have gone bad at 18K mi, and doubly disturbing that it appears that the engine case needs to be separated to replace this bearing. I understand that the orginal tension on the belts was set by the factory to 140Hz but then later changed to 110Hz. Was the reason for this change perhaps due to excessive tension and load on the bearings leading to pre-mature bearing failure...both pulley as well as cam belt driveshaft? Do any of you have experience with this? Is a little lateral play in the shaft ok (I suspect not) and do I have time to leave this be or it this a valve train failure waiting to happen? Anyone aware of Ducati (DucAudi) having a TSB or recall or program to help us offset the cost of the repair?
Thx.
never seen it before. it's 8 years old, so it's well out of warranty or any consideration thereof. and you don't know the history.
remove the pullies and seal and have a look at the bearing.
