Title: Rider Safety / Awareness Issue - Sydney Surrounds
Post by: Betty on August 11, 2013, 02:39:04 AM
Guys I posted this in the Coffee Run thread ... but it was suggested to me that it deserves a spot of its own. Again, if the mods feel so inclined ... they can bin it.

Please don't turn it into one of 'those threads' ... but I am posting because I believe it is a serious safety issue for riders and we should be mindful and aware of what is going on.

Last weekend we noted a 'Notice' in the window at Road Warriors on the Old Road regarding police 'behaviour'.

I can't remember the exact date, but it was only a couple of weeks ago. Apparently an un-marked car (soft-roader) ... would wait by the side of the road and then pull out in front of bikes. If the bikes did not immediately pass the vehicle it would purposely slow down below the speed limit encouraging an overtake - both instances likely to be over double lines.

The illegal overtake was then filmed and radioed through to a marked car further along the road.

The notice was asking those effected to contact an email address to consider options/action against the unconscionable and unsafe behaviour.

Apparently similar behaviour has been occurring along Macquarie Pass and it has been happening for some time (several occasions, different locations) ... so it has obviously been deemed safe and appropriate behaviour for the improvement of road safety and the continuing quest to protect us from ourselves - at all costs.

Thanks for the heads up Betty. [thumbsup]

Will be interested to see if that tactic, has any affect on the small minority of Bike riders out there, who would even do that sorta thing.

Another tactic, reported on car forums to be mindful off,is being tail gated buy an unmarked car, tempting you to speed up or brake suddenly.
Used to test P plater out, not fair.  >:(
This tactic was used on me many years ago with an unfavorable result for me :'(

There is justice after all............................................sometimes that is
Dug this post out of DOC's Facebook site, am sure they won't mind

Rod Ward posted to Ducati Owners Club of NSW

Today we celebrate a small victory over the dark forces of the Highway Patrol on the Old Pac Hwy. Nearly a year ago my bro and I were booked for passing over double unbroken lines passing an SUV who invited overtaking. Over two consecutive weekends 65 riders were booked for the same offence. It was a set up by Mr Plod.
Me and four others decided to take it to court to fight an injustice. Despite the odds WE WON!! Just shows sometimes you can beat the bastards!

yeah, this behaviour has been ongoing in QLD particularly on my glorious/nebo for a few years now. good work getting the word out, after all, overtaking on double lines is perliously dangerous and all riders should think twice and have a good look at the drivers skills and behaviour before doing so.

Good Guys Win!

Article ... with video for those with ADD:

Credit to the riders for taking the matter to court.

Well done and thank you to Magistrate Eve Wynhausen for seeing this for what it was.

You can all draw your own conclusions on the other party's involvement (please be mindful of the consequences of what you may want to post).

Although I have my suspicions ... I would love to know what comes of this quote from the article:

Quote from: linked article above
Ms Wynhausen criticised senior officers involved, saying their behaviour fell ''far short'' of the NSW Police Code of Conduct and Ethics.

A police statement said a standard review would be conducted into the failed court case and police would continue to target dangerous driver behaviour.

Surely falling far short of the Code of Conduct and Ethics is a sackable offence ... it would be for any other employee. The first place they can target dangerous driver behaviour is obviously within their own ranks.

It's good to know a win like that is possible after poor behavior.

A police statement said a standard review would be conducted into the failed court case

So the Police see the main problem is that they lost the court case, not that there might be anything wrong with their tactics.

and police would continue to target dangerous driver behaviour.

Be carefull out there who knows what they will come up with next.
